Catholic Bible Study Series: The Scripture scholarship of Fr. Joseph Ponessa and the teaching expertise of Laurie Manhardt have again produced an exceptional Catholic Bible study, The Gospel of John. The authors employ both inductive and deductive teaching methods to provide the reader with a thorough understanding of the Gospel. They take nothing for granted as they open this gospel and the teaching of the Church in a manner both didactic and inspirational. Some of the outstanding features of this study include:
• Numerous references to the Catechism of the Catholic Church
• Beautiful illustrations and design
• Engaging questions and helpful hints for study
• Rich teachings from the saints and Church Fathers
• Scriptural teaching applied to life situations
• Treasured Catholic prayers and devotions
Father Basil has need of assistance
this Sunday to distribute Holy Communion over at the BLC and to the homebound. Please volunteer!
For just as a body without a spirit is dead, so also faith
without works is dead.” James 2:26
LENTEN “BONA OPERA” Lenten “Good Works”
Now is the time to show our faith by our good works. As the Apostle James reminds us, faith
itself, unless it is accompanied by good works for the Lord, is dead.
Six weeks before the Sacred Triduum, the People of God consider the great act of love Jesus
accomplished for us when he carried our sins and nailed them, along with his body, to the Cross. This Lent, please consider an act you will accomplish for
the Lord. By God’s grace, may you choose to resolve to act,
and then keep to your resolve.
Bring your bible and a Catechism of the Catholic
Church. The parish will cover the cost of the
DVDs In order to assure delivery, please give your payment of $28 for the cost of the workbook to the parish secretary no later than February 15th. Additionally, one set of DVDs at a cost of $99 will be purchased by the parish.
This Lenten Bible Study will meet twice each
week on Sunday evenings and Thursday evenings during Lent. STUDY SESSIONS WILL
BEGIN ON SUNDAY MARCH 1ST AT 6:30 PM. Sessions will be 1 ½-2
hours in length.
A book purchase is necessary for each
participant at a cost of 28.00 per book, which
includes shipping. SIGN UP SHEETS FOR THIS STUDY
ARE LOCATED ON TABLE in back of the church.
PLEASE SIGN UP so that a sufficient number of
books and 1 set of DVDs can be ordered.
NOTE: IF YOU CANNOT MAKE TIME FOR THIS STUDY, BUT
WOULD LIKE TO HELP COVER THE COST FOR THE
WORKBOOK FOR SOMEONE ELSE, PLEASE CHIP IN AND
BUY A BOOK FOR SOMEONE WHO WOULD ENJOY TAKING
IN THIS LENTEN STUDY.

CHURCH OF ST. NICHOLAS CHURCH OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION
CHURCH OF THE SACRED HEART February 16, 2020
WHAT GOOD IS RELIGIOUS EDUCATION? For centuries the Catholic Church has held the answer to each social
problem and spiritual dilemma. It still does. Don’t believe it? Through Her Sacramental life, the Church is the guarantor against hopelessness—hopelessness which comes from living lives outside of Christ. The Church, with its “Sacramental Life” keeps despair from overtaking the human condition and brings joy to the soul. Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the Grace of God, the Help of God, the SACRAMENT OF GOD! The Sacraments are HELP from heaven. They are real! The Sacraments are necessary. If even ONE of the Church’s Sacraments is unnecessary to your salvation and mine, then the entire Church is a fraud and we are all still dead in our sins. Don’t kid yourselves, Jesus gave us the Church with Her Sacraments to help us all to Heaven! We must all teach the truth about the sacramentals we enjoy! Everybody needs the Church’s Sacraments. Why? Because…
Baptism is the Sacrament that begins the journey of our Faith. Baptism connects one’s soul to the Body and Soul of Christ. BAPTISM ONLY BEGINS OUR SACRED JOURNEY IN THE LIFE OF CHRIST. However, there is more, much more….
Confirmation is the Sacrament that SEALS the baptismal promises to reject evil by educating the soul in the Holy Spirit’s gifts. This sacrament UNITES the human person with the Spirit of Jesus Christ, God’s Holy Spirit.
Holy Eucharist is both source and summit of our life. It is the Sacrament that feeds us spiritually and physically in all truth, with the true Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ, helping the mind of Christians to “put on the mind of Christ” whenever we receive worthily at Holy Mass.
Penance purifies and renews that BEGINNING JOURNEY each time renewal of the soul is needed due to our choosing sin over God.
Matrimony builds up both the Church and Society. It orders the life of the soul properly and gives meaning and purpose to individuals. When children are born to a marital union between one man and one woman, they demonstrate most visibly that “the two become one flesh.” Through Matrimony, the family begins and the world is blessed with new life. Without this Sacrament, Society breaks down completely. Why? Because family breaks down. Without this Sacrament, Chaos ensues. “As the family goes, so goes the nation, and so goes the whole world” (Saint John Paul II).
Holy Orders is the Sacrament that sanctifies, governs, and teaches God’s holy Church (Church = the Baptized Faithful of God). Without this Sacrament, there would be no hope for Humanity. Why? Because there would be no more Eucharist. Jesus said, “Unless you eat my body and drink my blood…”
Extreme Unction (Anointing of the Sick) is that sacrament which heals the body, the soul, and the spirit in accord with God’s holy will. Anointing of the sick is never given to a deceased person. Sacraments are given to the living. If you have someone in the hospital; or if you know of someone who may be in danger of death, the time to call for a priest is not after the person has expired but before they have breathed their last.
