Ihavealwayshadanaffinityforquotedpassages,especiallyinspirationalonesthatforcemetothinkbeyondthewords.Iamremindedofthisonetoday:

Gratitude:AsIwritethisnote,thankfulthattherainhasstoppedforatleastaday,theraysofsunhaveremindedmeofhowgratefulIamtobeamongyouasamemberoftheSouthCarolinaFluteSociety.AsIperusetheto-dolistofdetailstocompletefortheupcomingSCFSyear,Inoticetheprofoundtalentonourmembershiplist,andhowthankfulIamtohaveyouallasfriendsandcolleagues.

FromCharlestontoMyrtleBeach,fromFlorencetoColumbia,andfromGreenvilletoSpartanburgourmembersareprofessionalsthatperforminextraordinarysymphonyorchestras,windbandsandchambergroups;teacherswhoarecommittedtotheartofteachingandtoobservingtheirstudentsgrowmusically;studentsthatcravenewmusicalexperiencesandwhoarecompetitivelocally,regionallyandnationally;andcommunitymemberswhocontinuetojustloveplayingthebestinstrumentintheworld!Ourstateisfortunatetohavesuchatalentedandvariedmembershipwhosupportlivemusicandthisflutesociety.Speakingofmembership,SCFSmembershiprenewalbeganSeptember1.YoucanfindthemembershipapplicationontheSCFSwebsite,andifyourenewbeforeDecember1,youwillreceivea10%discount!Someoftheperksofmembershipincludequarterlynewslettersthatincludearticlesoneverythingfrompedagogytonewmusictoflutehealthtothenumerousfluteeventsandhappeningsinourstate.Ifyouareinspiredtomakeadonationinadditiontoyourmembershipfee,SCFSisa501c3corporationandpartofyourmembershipfeesmaybetaxdeductible.Continuedonnextpage.

IhavebeeninvolvedwithSCFSinonewayoranothersinceitsinceptionin2007,andamhonoredtorepresentthissocietynowaspresidentinour10thanniversaryyear!OurfirstfestivalwasinFall2007atBobJonesUniversity,withguestartistTadeuCoelho,andwewillreturntoBobJonesUniversityforour10thSpringFestivalinApril2017.Eachyearwehavebeenfortunatetohostamazingperforming,recording,andteachingartists,includingBradleyGarner,JeanneBaxtresser,BonitaBoyd,ChristinaSmith,RhondaLarson,BrooksDeWetter-Smith,thelateCarlHall,NicolasDuchamp,PaulaRobison,andJillFelber.ThisyearwillbenodifferentasIampleasedtoannouncethatMarkSparks,principalflutistwiththeSt.LouisSymphonyOrchestra,willbetheGuestArtistforourspringfestivalApril7-8atBJU.

Lastbutnotleast,Iwouldliketogivea‘shoutout’tothenewlyelected2016-2017BoardofDirectorsandBoardMembersat-large,whograceuswiththeirgiftsthroughouttheyearwitheverythingfromupdatingby-laws,runningthewebsiteandhelpingwithcompetitions.

WeareproudtoannouncethatMarkSparkswillbetheguestartistattheSouthCarolinaFluteSocietySpringFestival

April7-8,2017atBobJonesUniversity!

FlutistMarkSparksisadynamicorchestralartist,soloist,chambermusician,andteacherwhohasperformedinmanyoftheworld’smostprestigiousvenues.Heiswidelyrecognizedforhiscolorfultone,spiritedphrasing,andcharismaticstyle(describedbytheDenverPostas"mesmerizing”).

AppointedPrincipalFlutistoftheSt.LouisSymphonyOrchestrabythelateHansVonkin2000,hehasappearedassoloistwiththeSt.LouisSymphonynumeroustimes,mostrecentlyinFebruary2015,October2014,andontheOrchestra's2013CaliforniaTourinperformancesofChristopherRouse'sConcertoforFluteandOrchestra,withSTLSymphony,MusicDirectorDavidRobertsonconducting.HehasappearedasguestPrincipalflutistwithnumerousensemblesincludingtheNewYorkPhilharmonic,theChicago,Dallas,Cincinnati,Minnesota,Pittsburgh,andBergenNorwaySymphonyOrchestras,andwasamemberoftheBaltimore,SanAntonio,Memphis,CantonOhio,andCaracasVenezuelaSymphonyOrchestrasbeforehisappointmenttotheSTLSymphony.ConcertoappearancesalsoincludetheAspenPhilharmonia,TaiwanNational,andSingaporeSymphonyOrchestras.

SparkscanbeheardassolorecordingartistontheSummitandAAMlabels,withvariousorchestrasontheSony,Telarc,Nonesuch,andDeccalabels,andhasrecentlyreleasedhisthirdsolorecording,"FrenchAlbum”withpianistPeterHenderson.

Mr.Sparksenjoysagenerousscheduleofmasterclasses,teaching,andrecitalperformances.RecentactivitiesincludedappearancesattheOhioFluteAssociation,TexasFluteSociety,theIllinoisFluteSociety,theEastmanSchoolofMusic,theCurtisInstituteofMusic,OberlinCollege,NorthwesternUniversity,andYale,amongothers,aresidencyatBaylorUniversity,recitalsatNFAConventions,mostrecentlypresentingtheworldpremiereofKatherineHoover’sFourWindsConcertoforFluteandOrchestrainWashington,D.C.OtherrecentactivitiesincludedaNewYorkFluteClubrecitalandmasterclass,residenciesatIthacaCollegeandtheUniversityofMissouriatColumbia,andrecitalsatMaryvilleUniversity,theSLAMinSt.Louis,theChicagoFluteClub,andDePaulUniversity.AdditionalengagementsincludednumerousappearanceswiththeChicagoSymphonyasGuestPrincipalfluteunderRiccardoMuti,amasterclassatTheColburnSchool,amasterclassandrecitalforthePortland,OregonFluteSociety.PlansalsoincluderesidenciesattheSouthCarolinaFluteFestival,andtheUniversityofNorthCarolina,recitalsandmasterclassesintheBostonarea,coachingsfortheNationalYouthOrchestra,the2017STLSymphonypremieroftheHooverConcerto,andperformancesoftheBachBminorSuitewiththeSTLSymphonyinMarch.Continuedonnextpage.

Aninternationallyrecognizedteacher,SparkswasrecentlyappointedtotheteachingfacultyatDePaulUniversity.Heisaformerfull-timefacultymemberofBaltimore'sPeabodyInstitute,andmaintainsabusyteachingstudioinSt.Louis.NumerousformerstudentsoccupyorchestrachairsandteachingpositionsintheU.S.andabroad.HefrequentlycoachesattoporchestraltrainingprogramssuchasAspen,theNewWorldSymphony,NOI,andthePacificMusicFestivalinSapporo,Japan.Insummer2016hejoinedthecoachingfacultyoftheCarnegieHallNationalYouthOrchestra,andthissummerhejoinsthefacultyofFlautialCastelloinTuscany,Italy.

Mr.Sparksisa24-yearfacultymemberoftheAspenMusicFestivalandSchool,andisPrincipalflutistoftheAspenChamberSymphony.Heisanavidwriteronflute-relatedsubjects,andaregularcontributortoFluteTalkMagazine.SparksalsohasrecentlypublishedfluteandpianoarrangementsofworksbyBruchandFaurewithTheodorePresser.

BornintheU.S.in1960,Mr.SparksgraduatedwithhonorsfromtheOberlinConservatoryasastudentofRobertWilloughby.HeisamemberofPiKappaLambdaSociety,andtheNationalFluteAssociation,andASCAP.Mr.SparksalsotrainedattheTanglewoodMusicFestival,Aspen,Sarasota,andtheNationalRepertoryOrchestra.c

HopefullyeveryflutistatleastknowsofWilliamKincaid,butwhatisprobablylittleknownisthatheisburiedinGaffney,SC!Thatmayseemalittleodd,sinceheisfromMinneapolis,Minnesota,andlivedinNewYorkCitywhilehestudiedwithGeorgesBarrèreatwhatisnowtheJuilliardSchoolandplayedsecondflutewiththeNewYorkSymphony.AndevenmorestrangebecausehespentthemajorityofhislifeinPhiladelphia,wherehewasprincipalofthePhiladelphiaOrchestraandtaughtatCurtis.

SowhywouldKincaidbeburiedinSouthCarolina?HewasmarriedtoMissHelenGoodingofGaffney,anorganistforthe

FirstBaptistChurch.ShediedJuly21,1965inPhiladelphiaandwasburiedinOaklandCemetery,Gaffney.WhenKincaiddiedtwoyearslater,onMarch27,1967,alsoinPhiladelphia,hewasburiednexttoher.

SCFSmembersEmilyStumpfandLaurenWatkins,whoclaimKincaidastheirgreat,great,greatgrandfatherintheirflutefamilytree,firstheardthatKincaidwasburiedinSouthCarolinawhenstudyingthebookKincaidianabyJohnKrellinstudioclassattheUniversityofSouthCarolina.Thissummertheydecidedtomakeapilgrimageandtryandfindhisgrave.www.findagrave.comwashelpfulinnamingthecemeteryandgivinganaddressandapictureofwhatthegravelookedlike.Thecemeteryiseasyenoughtofind,butisalsolargeenoughthatittookabitofwanderingbeforetheyfoundthegraves.ThetrickythingisthatbothKincaidandhiswife’sheadstonesareflatandinasmallplotsurroundedbylargerfamilyplotswithbigheadstones.Itcanbeeasytowalkrightbytheirgraves.
