Introducing Fact FamiliesTell the students that a collection of addition andsubtraction facts is called a Fact Family. Show themthat on the roof of each fact family house are thenumbers needed for that fact family. Show them theaddition and subtraction facts that are on the house.Point out that the same numbers are used in each fact.In the addition facts, the larger number is used in thelast space as the total. In the subtraction facts, thelarger number will be found first.

Fact Family Match H a ve students work with part n e r s. Give each of thep a rtners a copy of the re p ro d u c i b l e. Assign a number toeach of the part n e r s. Have them cut out the bird with thatnumber and paste it in the outline on the ro o f. Have themcomplete the fact family using the Fact Fa m i l i e s p ro d u c tas their guide. Ask the partners to check each other’s work.H a ve the partners cut out and color their houses.

Fact Family Fill-In G i ve each student two copies of the blank fact familyh o u s e. Encourage them to use the Fact Family Fi l l - I nre p roducibles to fill two different fact families. Have thestudents complete the fact families and color the houses.
