The international agreement for States division of the
ocean environment was a conference that convened in
New York in 1973. It ended nine years later with the
adoption in 1982 of a constitution for the seas - the
United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea
(UNCLOS).

●Contiguous Zone: 24 nm(UNCLOS, art . 13)
●EEZ: up to 200 nm(UNCLOS, art . 56)
●Continental Shelf: up to 350 nm(UNCLOS, art. 76)

A line delineated to the outermost fixed points at each of
which the thickness of sedimentary rocks is at least 1% of
the shortest distance from such point to the foot of the
continental slope (FOS).
Criteria for limits extension
Straight lines not exceeding 60 nm length, from the foot of
the continental slope. connecting fixed points, defined by
coordinates of latitude and longitude”.

Based on these criteria, Spain together
with some European countries have
proposed the extension of the CS in two
specific areas.
●The Celtic Sea and Bay of Biscay Area
(France, Ireland, UK, Spain)
●The Galicia Bank and Portuguese Margin
(Portugal and Spain)
