AT the age of 111,ManteleMsi-
manga has very few people on
the planet who are older than
her.
According to her battered
IdentityDocument,Msimanga
of Bolata Village in Qwaqwa
turned 111 on 16 July.
Do you see how old I ammy
child? You probably think you
are seeing a ghost, dont you?
She asks in a smooth, but
strong voice.
Although she is now blind,
Msimanga still has a fairly
sharpmemory and is thus able
to recall her childrens as well
as someof her grandchildrens
names.
Several generations who
can trace their lineage back to
Msimanga held a party over
the weekend to celebrate the
old womans birthday.
I think my grandmother
has lived this long because of
her healthy fear of God,
Mpuse Mofokeng said.
Mofokengs mother, Mat-
shidisoMofokeng, who recent-
lywent blind herself until a re-
cent eye operation to remove a
cataract restored sight to her
one eye, stays with and looks
after the old lady.
She said despite her moth-
ers very advanced age, she ac-
tually rarely ever became ill.
You would think I have to
take her to the doctor regular-
ly, but actually not, she is very
strong, Matshidiso said.
Matshidiso said her mother
had a healthy appetite for
sweetswithLiquoriceAllsorts
being a particular favourite,
as she scratched around the
wardrobe and pulled out a
handful of the soft sweets and
handed them to her mother.
Asked howmany grand- and
great-grandchildren she had,
Msimanga gave ahearty laugh
and just shook her head amid
a chorus of laughter from her
family who had surrounded
her to sing her Happy Birth-
day.
Last week, the Sowetan
newspaper reported the story
of Johanna Mazibuko of
Klerksdorp who at 119 had a
claim to be South Africas old-
est person.
In June, the worlds oldest
known person, Jiroemon
Kimura of Japan, died at the
ripe old age of 116.

THE City of Roses is expected to come
alive with the annual FNB Grey College
Music Festival to be held later next month.
This years event, which will take place
on 30 and 31 August at the Sand du Plessis
Theatre, promises to be a highlight on the
Bloemfontein social and cultural calendar.
The festival which was conceived by Dr
Michau Heyns, ex-headmaster of Grey
College in 1982, is a unique and the only
event of its kind in South Africa.
It was formally known as the Grey
College Choir Festival and used to take
place at the Centenery hall in the Free
State capital. Later, it was moved to the
Bloemfontein town hall to accommodate
the growing number of audience.
The Grey boys will be joined on the stage
by legendary singer and songwriter Jak de
Priester, the beautiful and talented Caro-
line Haasbroek and the exquisite voice of
Valiant Swart.
We are thrilled with the artist line-up
we were able to secure this year and
rehearsals are going very well.
We always use artists from all over the
country. At the end of the show we always
have the whole school on the stage; all the
boys from the school sing as the mass
orchestra, Celeste Venter, the organiser of
the event, told Express.
And the artists sing together with them
on the stage. Thats a very nice thing to
see and the boys enjoy that.
People can expect to be blown away.
There will also be a few surprises during
the shows, she said.
On 29 August, various childrens homes
and old-age homes will attend the dress
rehearsals, an afternoon of entertainment
that many would not have had the opportu-
nity to experience otherwise. They will also
attend shows for free.
The idea is to treat them to enjoy the
evening with us by just sitting back,
relaxing and forgetting about everything.
During the break we will give them
something to eat and drink.
We have organised transport to take
them to the venue and back home, Venter
said.
First National Bank (FNB) has been the
title sponsor for this festival for the past
seven years.
By supporting an event of this nature
we would like to demonstrate our commit-
ment to youth development and the arts.
We are proud to be associated with an
event that has established itself as a
highlight on the Grey College cultural
calendar, and which continues to deliver a
most rewarding collaboration between our
youth and experienced artists, George van
Staden, FNBs regional manager: Banking
Channels in the Free State, said.
During the schools 150th anniversary in
2005, the choir festival changed its colours
and the name changed to the Grey College
Choir Festival, which its purpose to enrich
the wide variety of music talent of the
Grey boys, giving them the opportunity
with the top artists such as the following:
Steve Hofmeyr, Laurika Rauch, DNA
Strings, Theuns Jordaan, Nianell, Anna
Davel, Dozi, Drie van die Bestes, Karen
Zoid, Lize Beekman, Jennifer Jones, Charl
du Plessis, Brandon October, Bianca le
Grange, Coenie de Villiers and Romanz.
Tickets cost R170 for both adults and
children.
They will be available from Monday at
Grey College Secondarys office.

AUGUST is Womens Month and Pacofs, an
agency of the Department of Arts, Culture and
Recreation, will be celebrating the month by
hosting a womens festival from 6 to 9 August.
Productions presented this year are:
) The Fat Black Women Sing, which is a
musical and poetry piece introducing a
four-piece band and six fabulously figured
female vocalists who perform songs and poems
that reflect where we come from and who we
are as women inside these bodies in the world
today.
)Behind the Mask, a dance piece choreo-
graphed by Mdu Mtshali tells the story of
African women, hidden behind their masks.
They are forced to remove their masks by
pain, poverty, rape, humiliation, abuse and
violence as they rise to fight for their children
and themselves.
)Adjusted, The rapists go free while society
and government turn a blind eye.
)Mary . . . the Unfaithful Woman is a hard
drama which depicts the true battle of the
sexes, the love wars that couples wage against
each other in the struggle to overcome their
emotional dependency, leading to self-destruc-
tion, hate, bitterness and tragedy. This
poignant love story is another masterpiece
written and directed by Jullian Seleke Mokoto
and starring Dieketseng Mnisi.
)Women of Jazz featuring the multi-award-
winning Judith Sephuma, Thiwe Mbola
(collaborated with DJ Black Coffee), a young
phenomenal singer with the voice of an angel,
and our own local artist, Thoko Nogabe, with
her dazzling talent. The MC will be the
multi-talented actor, rape activist and budding
author, Tinah Mnumzana. The production will
be performed at Pacofs theatres in Bloemfon-
tein. Tickets are already available at the
booking office of Pacofs. For more information,

EXPELLED from the ruling party
in 2012, political analysts say the
former ANC Youth League
president, Julius Malema, is the
ANCs biggest opponent going into
the 2014 national elections.
Analysts say Malemas newly-
formed political party, the
Economic Freedom Fighters
(EFF), is highly likely to secure
enough votes to get a foot in
parliament.
The 2014 ballot is expected to
feature a number of new political
parties, including Dr Mamphela
Rampheles Agang SA, SA First, a
party of former members of the
African National Congress (ANC)
military wing, uMkhonto we
Sizwe, and the EFF.
The political analyst Hussain
Solomon said the ANC was likely
to win the elections by a 58% to
60% margin.
The ANC has held a majority of
the seats in the National Assem-
bly since 1994, being re-elected
with increasing majorities in 1999
and 2004, but had a slight fall in
its majority from 69% to 65,9% in
2009.
The party will lose votes to the
EFF, Solomon said.
The political analyst Andr
Duvenhage said it was highly
unlikely that the ANC Free State
would win the elections by an
82% margin, considering divisions
in the province.
During the partys provincial
conference the ANC Free State
chairperson, premier Ace Ma-
gashule, promised the partys
national leadership an 82%
victory in the elections.
In 2009 the Free State clinched
71% of the votes, a drastic fall
from 81% in 2004.
Forces of change in the Free
State have defected to the EFF
and that decreases votes for the
ANC, Duvenhage said.
The political analyst Theo
Neethling said Agang and the DA
would compete against each other
to secure votes from the middle
class.
Whether Agang will have its
structures in place prior to the
elections is questionable, Neeth-
ling said.
Agang does not have a charis-
matic leader like Malema who can
connect with the ordinary people
on the grass roots, Solomon
added.
The ANCs biggest opposition
party, the DA, received 11,6% of
the votes in 2009, up from 8,4% in
2004 in the Free State.
Analysts expect Cope to lose
votes following the partys
infighting over leadership posi-
tions.
The Freedom Front Plus votes
declined from 2,47% in 2004 to 2%
in 2009 in the province.
With criminal charges still
looming over Malema, Solomon
said it was not sure whether
Malema would make it to the
voting polls.
One has to wait and see if
Malema will get prosecuted
before the elections, Solomon
said.
There will be many more
Waterkloof and Nkandla scandals
before people stop voting for the
ANC, but 2019 is a different
scenario, Solomon concluded.

DIPUO PETERS, the newly-ap-
pointed minister of Transport,
has applauded the Road Accident
Fund (RAF) for its sterling work.
Peters said she thanked the
RAF for opening her eyes dur-
ing a visit to the RAF on the Road
Outreach Campaign in Thabong,
Welkom, on Saturday.
The minister, accompanied by
provincial, taxi and road safety
officials, was impressed as she
was first taken on a guided tour
of operations at theThabong com-
munity hall by RAF CEO, Dr Eu-
gene Watson.
With RAF executive and board
members in tow, the days op-
erations were outlined while
hundreds of claimants made
enquiries, finalised settlements
and laid complaints of alleged
fraud cases.
The minister later addressed
claimants and gave them the as-
surance that the RAF and govern-
ment would be there every step of
the way to give them the neces-
sary support in the unfortunate
event of accidents.
She declared war on unscrupu-
lous lawyers who rip-off claim-
ants and prey on vulnerable road
accident victims, questioning
how they could sleep at night af-
ter siphoning off money meant
for deserving people.
Even if it means these lawyers
losing their ability to practice by
striking them off the roll, so be
it.
Peters also sounded a stern
warning to touts who lay in wait
for ambulances that offload pa-
tients at hospitals after an acci-
dent then tip off lawyers.
I will speak to the minister of
Health and minister of Justice to
tackle this problem. We are not
going to turn the RAF into a ha-
ven of criminality.
The delegation was particular-
ly touched when they were taken
on a home visit of 13-year-old
Kamohlelo Radebe who was
knocked down by a truck and sus-
tained severe mental injuries al-
most ten years ago.
Radebe gets financial support
from the RAF and is being looked
after byhis grandmother as a full-
time caregiver, paid for by the
RAF. He will be admitted to a
boarding school next year.
If there was no RAF and no
compensation, what would hap-
pen to a child like Kamohelo?
Watson asked.

ON Friday the countrys leading
total beverage company honoured
its commitment to South Africans
Against Drunk Driving (SADD)
and presented them with a cheque
for R60 000.
As part of its award-winning
Drive Dry campaign, brandhouse
committed to providing funds to
the responsible drinking company
should it reach a target of 3 000
online declarations made by the
end of June.
Earlier this month, brandhouse
announced it had reached the
target and would honour its
commitment.
The target was met thanks to
the many South Africans who
declared to drink responsibly via
the Drive Dry social media
platforms. The website
(www.drivedry.co.za) links to
actual Facebook events and offers
consumers two options to
declare to either drink and not
drive or drive and not drink.
brandhouse continues to
promote responsible drinking and
encourage all consumers to take
responsibility for their own
actions, which ultimately affects
the lives of others too, said
Sibani Mngadi, external affairs
manager at brandhouse, at the
handover.
The aim of Drive Dry is to
change behaviour amongst
consumers with regard to driving
under the influence of alcohol.
We support civil society
initiatives that have the same
objective of curbing alcohol
misuse. Top of the list is South
Africans Against Drunk Driving,
which happens to have the same
passion as Drive Dry in reducing
alcohol-related carnage on our
roads, he said.
Mngadi presented Caro Smit,
founder and owner of SADD, with
the cheque at brandhouses head
office in Observatory, Cape
Town.
Smit started the SADD in 2005
after her 23-year-old son had been
killed by a drunk driver.
On behalf of the SADD I would
like to thank brandhouse for the
cheque as well as the continued
support over the years. We are a
non-profit organisation that
educates South Africans about the
dangers of drinking and driving.
We work together with
partners such as brandhouse to
save lives and bring down the
death count, says Smit.
Both parties encourage South
Africans under the influence of
alcohol to make use of a designat-
ed driver or taxi services and
public transport and incorporate
responsible drinking as an active
part of their social culture.

DR GWEN RAMOKGOPA,
South Africas deputy minister
of Health, says South African
students studying medicine in
Cuba are known for spending
their student stipend on living
a lavish life.
Our South African medical
students are known for their
opulence and wearing expen-
sive brands in Cuba, Ram-
okgopa said.
Ramokgopa was addressing
prospective medical students
short-listed for the RSA-Cuba
Medical Students Training
Programme on Sunday at
Bophelo House, Bloemfontein.
Earlier this year 6 of the 187
South African medical stu-
dents who had embarked on a
hunger strike were recalled by
minister of Health Aaron Mot-
soaledi after they had refused
to continue with their studies
unless their stipends were in-
creased. Students demanded a
$500 increase to the $200 (about
R1 600) monthly stipend they
receive, bringing it up to $700
(about R5 600). The students
were amongst 187 studentswho
had gone on a hunger strike
over stipend increases and oth-
er grievances.
Government doesnt have
that kind of money, Ram-
okgopa said.
Ramokgopa said the R2 000
stipend given to students every
month was only to cover per-
sonal items such as toiletries.
Ramokgopa said the stipend
was more than the salaries
earned by professors and other
educators in Cuba.
With a serious shortage of
doctors in the country Ram-
okgopa said the eight higher
education institutions in South
Africa did not have enough
space to enrol prospectivemed-
ical students.
She said it would take 20
years to get the 20 000 doctors
needed in the country if other
prospective medical students
didnt study in Cuba. Ram-
okgopa said students had also
complained about the Cuban
food and overcrowded lodging.
We wont increase the sti-
pend, she said.
The South African govern-
ment spends aboutR500 000 per
student over six years for a lan-
guage course, medical training
and living expenses in Cuba.

AMONG the pressing issues requir-
ing our attention, particularly in the
month of August, designated as Na-
tional Womens Month, is the need to
remove the barriers hindering the
progress of women in our societies.
The progress and empowerment of
womenandattaininga status equal to
mens, is fundamental to the well-be-
ing of the earth and its people.
The emancipation of women is not
only necessary for the future well-be-
ing of our societies; it is also a prereq-
uisite to world peace.
In one of its recent messages, the
Universal House of Justice, the gov-
erning council of the Bah interna-
tional community, states:
. . . the equality of men and wom-
en is . . . a universal spiritual truth
about an aspect of the nature of hu-
man beings . . . It is, above all, a re-
quirement of justice.
This principle is consonant with
the highest rectitude of conduct, its
application strengthens family life,
and it is essential to the regeneration
and progress of any nation, the peace
of the world, and the advancement of
civilization.
Thewell-being ofmankind depends
on the development of the potential
virtues and abilities of every individ-
ual. Women and men compliment
each other in their roles.
The happiness and stability of hu-
manity cannot be assured unless they
are both perfected and treated as
equals. According to the Bah Writ-
ings: Theworld of humanity has two
wings one is women and the other
men.Not until bothwings are equally
developed can the bird fly.
Should one wing remain weak,
flight is impossible and the happi-
nessofmankindwill be realizedwhen
women and men coordinate and ad-
vance equally, for each is the comple-
ment and helpmeet of the other.
Bahs view the equality of men
and women as an essential aspect of
abroaderprinciple: theonenessofhu-
manity. In the context of the oneness
of humanity, equality of the sexes is
not only a requirement of justice, but
it is apre-requisite forpeaceandpros-
perity.
According to the Bah Scriptures:
. . . men andwomen are equal in the
sight of God . . . The only difference
between themnow is due to lack of ed-
ucation and training.
Ifwomanisgivenequalopportuni-
ty of education, distinction and esti-
mate of inferiority will disappear.

ears and eyes of the commu-
nity and also of the vehicle
owners,Manyoni explained.
We are trying to get rid of
the informal car attendants
that you normally find every-
where in townwho are trying
to assist motorists with park-
ing and demand to be paid for
that. As a municipality we
want to ensure that we have
official parking marshals
who are trained to do the
job, Manyoni also alluded
the fact that the official park-
ing marshals would be paid
by his municipality.
The marshals will be paid
by us and motorists dont
need to pay them any stipend.
They are employed by the
municipality to assist themo-
torists in our area. Drivers
can give tips to marshals out
of their own will, it is not
compulsory. I want to reiter-
ate that the marshals will be
paid by the Mangaung Met-
ro, he stressed.
The system will first be
rolled out at the Charlotte
Maxeke and St Andrews
Streets, and then the city will
later announce other streets
where the PMS would be op-
erating. Motorists will be ex-
pected to pay the marshals a
set amount, depending on the
time they will be parking.
Motorists should demand
a receipt after paying for the
parking. We want to have
records of all the transac-
tions, the mayor said.
At the moment we have
employed 110 marshals. We
advertised these positions
and successful candidates
were selected. All of them
were verted to ensure that
they dont have any criminal
records.
Ultimately we are going to
need about 500 marshals to
work across our municipali-
ty.
John Solomon, one of the
marshals, said he was over
the moon to be employed by
the Mangaung Metro.
I want to applaud themay-
or for providing jobs to us.
This was long overdue. We
are going to enjoy the bene-
fits that other municipal
workers get, benefits sush as
UIF. I am so very happy.

THE Central University of
Technology (CUT), Free State,
helps combat unemployment with
its annual Career Fair connect-
ing graduates to industry jobs.
A record number of companies,
including First National Bank
(FNB), the South African Police
Service (SAPS) and the Depart-
ment of Trade and Industry (DTI),
registered to take part in the
annual graduate recruitment
event, hosted by the CUT on 24
and 25 July in the Boet Troskie
Hall, CUT Bloemfontein Campus.
The career fair is a great
networking event that we at the
CUT host annually to bring
potential employers under one
roof to interact and network with
our students, Prof. Mabokang
Monnapula-Mapesela, dean of
academic development and
support, said in her address at the
official opening of the Career Fair.
The first Career Fair in 2006
brought about only 16 employers.
In 2013 the fair has attracted over
41 companies to showcase their
portfolios and career opportunities
for CUT students. It gives students
the opportunity to meet face-to-
face with employers, explore
different companies, get more
information about various
industries and learn more about
job opportunities.
We have built strong relation-
ships with government, business
and industry and I am glad to say
we broke the record this year in
terms of a record number of
employers who were involved in
the Career Fair 2013. I am sure
that our students will be recruited
and considered for employment
after the fair, Monnapula-Mapese-
la concluded.
Present at the official opening
was Dr Herman Mashaba, a CUT
alumnus and founder of Black
Like Me. Mashaba shared his
personal tribulations and tri-
umphs as a young man growing
up in the old South Africa where
opportunities for development
were far and few in between.
Unlike the youth of today,
Mashaba said that he and many of
his peers never had the same
opportunities to attend a universi-
ty of their choice.
The CUT Human Resources
Management students also assisted
with the preparation of student
recruitment by managing a CV
Clinic, where they gave advice on
CV writing to other CUT students.
The annual Career Fair is not
only limited to graduate recruit-
ment, but is also an opportunity
for attendees to build strategic
partnerships and address the
business development needs of the
Free State. This event helps to
generate an industry-ready
workforce, said Prof. Henk de
Jager, deputy vice-chancellor:
academic at the CUT.
Career Fair keeps on growing
THE group representing the companies National Health Laboratory Service, ETDP Seta, Eduloan and South
African Breweries (SAB) has been exhibiting at the CUTs growing Career Fair for the past five consecutive
years. The event aims to link students to industry, giving them the opportunity to meet face-to-face with
employers, explore different companies, getmore information about various industries and learnmore about
job opportunities to combat unemployment of CUT students. Photo: Supplied

The reason we ask you to switch off your geyser between
5pm and 9pm, is that the country uses more electricity
during this time and supply is under severe pressure.
Switching off your geyser helps free up power for other
things and relieves the pressure on the grid.
Heres an interesting fact, the huge demand for energy
during the evening between 5pm and 9pm is the equivalent
of one power station. There is an estimated 5,4 million
electric geysers in homes across South Africa.

PAULINE GUTTER, a modern Bloemfon-
tein artist, has been chosen as the overall

For her efforts, the 33-year-old visual
artist received R125 000 from Absa, a

Im so very happy to eventually win

like a dream come true. It is a special
feeling for me, Gutter told Express.
The prize money I won will be for my

as well, she said.
Gutter completed her degree in Fine

IT is often said that derbies are dull
affairs, but this was definitely not a
dull affair, Stuart Baxter, Kaizer
Chiefs coach, told journalists in a post-
match press conference on Saturday.
This was after Amakhosi had defeat-
ed their old foes Orlando Pirates 1-0 in
theCarlingBlackLabelCupencounter
at the FNB Stadium.
This was a tight affair. And I must
admit thatPirates gaveusa run for our
money. In the first half, they were all
over us and we kept on making some
poor decisions with the ball. Pirates
took advantage of that. They had a few
chances to score, but were unlucky.
Our defenders were brilliant and they
defended our box very well. So thats
why it was a tight game, Baxter said.
The second half for us was both
heaven and hell. We were defending
the box very, very strongly. We knew
Pirates would come on the longer the
gamewent andwe had some very good
transitions, but we gave up some very
good chances, he added.
Thewin of Saturdaywas the first for
Kaizer Chiefs in the Carling Black La-
bel Cup. Pirates won the previous two
editions of the competition by penal-
ties.
Pirates put us under a lot of pres-
sure and Im just happy to get away
with a win. It is nice to give the Chiefs
fans the long-awaited Carling Black
Label Cup because Pirates had domi-
nated, an elated Baxter said.
Now Chiefs will shift their focus to
the Absa Premiership League which
kicks off on Friday.
The Glamour Boys will begin their
campaign with a tricky match against
Mpumalanga Black Aces at the
Mbombela Stadium on Friday. Kick-
off is at 20:00.
It is going to be another tough
match forusbecauseevery teamwants
to beatChiefs.Weare ready for the sea-
son ahead. Our aim is to start with a
win like we did last season, Baxter
said.
