  • Exercise programmes for patientsOsteoarthritis of the kneeThis leaflet describes exercises which are designed to improve the range of motion in your knee aswell as maintaining and improving the strength of the muscles around the knee.

    Follow the advice shown below – but you will probably find it easier if you use this leaflet inconjunction with the accompanying video.

    STRAIGHT LEG RAISE

    Remember- if the pain persists or gets worse with exercise then stop and make an appointment to see your doctor

    Step 1Sit in good posture with your legshanging off a bed or chair thengradually straighten up your knee

    Step 1Lie down with your legs straightwith the foot and kneecap facing upto the ceiling

    Step 4Repeat 15 times.

    Step 2Gently press the knee into the floor,contracting the muscles in the frontof the upper leg

    Step 2Hold that position for five seconds

    Step 3Then bend your knee back down asfar as possible and relax

    Step 4Repeat 15 times.
