The Greenest Building is one that’s Already There

Historic Preservation & Green Building

What is Green Building?

“Green Building” is

“Sustainable Design”

Cultural Sustainability

Environmental Sustainability…

Energy Efficiency Embodied Energy

Recycling

Historic Preservation is the Ultimate Recycling

Environmental Sustainability

Energy efficiency includes high performance utilities and equipment as well as conserving the energy we do use

Embodied energy is the cost of creating or replacing the materials that are already in that existing building

Recycling an historic building includes adapting it to new uses so that it can be used for many more years

Economic Sustainability…

Local Jobs Local Investment

Local Value

Historic Preservation Equals Good Jobs & Good Pay

Economic Sustainability

Preserving an existing building creates more long term local jobs than building one new building

Money paid to workers gets spent locally, they buy tools, get hair cuts, and go out to lunch or dinner

Well maintained older and historic buildings retain their value at a higher level than new construction

Cultural Sustainability…

Smart GrowthAffordable Housing

Cultural Memories

Historic Preservation is Our Past and Our Future

Cultural Sustainability

Smart Growth principles are all met when a community invests in its existing buildings and historic places

Typically old building are the most affordable for both commercial and residential uses, this promotes a vibrant and livable place

Without memories nothing has value, our history is captured and preserved in the buildings around us

Sustainability Means ResponsibilityResponsibility Means Stewardship

“Sustainability means stewardship. There can be no sustainable development without a central role for historic preservation. That’s what you all are doing today, and future generations will thank you for it tomorrow” Donovan Rypkema, Traditional Building, Boston

Historic Preservation is
