EVALUATION QUESTION 3: WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?By Kareem Lyew-Sang

There are many possible media institutions that could distribute our film if we had made a complete product. Some examples of distributions are cinemas, film festivals or on TV. Cinemas tend to distribute big blockbuster films but there are independent cinemas that show smaller independent films as well as big well known films. Film festivals which show films to and audience and awards are given out for the best films and TV for the general wider audience.

Currently at my local odeon it seems to be showing quite a few films from a few genres. Genres consist of Action, Sci-fi, Drama, adventure, fantasy, comedy and animation. Some being a mix of these genres. The most prevalent genres at the moment seem to be Action and drama. Our product is a crime thriller and does not fall into the type of films being shown currently in my local odeon.

This tells me that around this time he audience of my local cinema around this time is more likely to be watching action or drama films. Also that the audience seems to want to watch these kind of movies around this time of year (January) This could be due to it being just after the Christmas period and into New Years meaning that audiences want to see more heart felt movies. So drama becomes more popular.

The films showing at my cinema are different from the films showing at Woking as there seems to be more adventure films and less drama and action films. This could be because the audience in Woking might be younger or more of the population has children who would want to watch adventure type movies.

DAVID LEAN CINEMA

Currently at David lean independent cinema the genres of the films being shown seem to be drama, sci-fi, fantasy, thriller, mystery, comedy and romance. The most prevalent genre at the moment is Drama. This not the genre of our film.

READING FILM THEATRE

Currently at Reading film theatre the genres of the films being shown are drama, romantic, thriller, history and sport. With the most prevalent genre being drama. This does not fit with the genre of our film which is. A crime thriller.

The most popular genre in both independent cinemas was drama. This tells us that the audiences for independent cinemas are into dramas. This could be due to the audiences going to these cinemas being of a higher demographic of those going to big cinemas such as odeon. Also may be of the succeeders psychographic as most of these films are high quality films but require a lot of thought. Linking to succeeders focus on quality and self reward. This is very different for that of odeon cinemas as both action and drama where the most prevalent. This could be due to a larger amount of screens to host more movies. This could also be due to lose on cinemas hosting more mainstream audiences who want to see big blockbuster movies in which most people will see. For example Star Wars rouge one.

BFI FILM FESTIVAL

At the BFI film festival the genres of film being shown are mystery, thriller, drama and history. The most prevalent being drama with thriller being a close second. Our film is a thriller but most of the thrillers shown are drama thrillers unlike our film which is a crime thriller.

SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL

At the sundance film festival the genre of the films being shown are adventure, drama, and mystery. The most prevalent being drama. This does not fit our genre of crime thriller.

The films that seem to win the most awards at film festivals happen mostly be of the drama genre. This tells me that the drama genre tends to get the most awards and are the more highly acclaimed films. This suggests that action films although are shown and seen more in big cinemas it's the dramas that seem to get more awards. This could be due to the demographics and psychographics that go to film festivals. They tend to be of a higher demographic who tend to earn more money. Meaning that a large majority may be left out of the opinion of the actual population. Causing the more widely see movie genres such as action and crime thrillers to not get as much awards at festivals.

FILM 4

SKY CINEMA

ODEON CINEMAS VS INDEPENDENT CINEMAS

If our film was to be shown in either odeon cinema or an independent our film would most likely be shown in a odeon cinema. This is because the genres shown at independent cinemas don't fit with the genre of our film. They tend to show dramas more than any thing else unlike odeon which is more likely to show a crime thriller.

BFI VS SUNDANCE

Between the BFI film festival and the sundance film festival our film is more likely to be shown at the BFI film festival. This is because the sundance film festival shows very few thrillers and a large majority is drama once again. BFI shows quite a few thrillers although most of them are drama thrillers.

SKY CINEMA VS FILM 4

Out of the the two sky cinema and film 4 our film is more likely to be shown on film 4 rather than Sky cinema. This is because sky cinema tends to show mainly big blockbuster movies containing mostly action movies compared to film 4 which shows alarms range of movies and more thrillers. With our film being a crime thriller film 4 is where it would most likely be shown.

Out of all the possible institutions I have researched I feel that out film realistically would be shown on at film festivals. As it is not a big blockbuster movie with a high budget the likelihood of it being shown in cinemas is very low and the fact that it's a crime thriller makes the chances of it being shown in a independent cinema low also. Film festivals are more willing to show new talent low or high budget. Also thriller genres seem to be more popular at film festivals than cinemas or on to.
