Barriers to positive influence on Pro-environmental behavior

Variables associated with pro-environmental behavior

• Lack of External possibilities

• Lack of Internal Incentives

• Negative or insufficient feedback about behavior

• Old Behavior Patterns

• Knowledge of the issues

• Knowledge of action strategies

• Internal Locus of control

• Strong pro-environmental attitudes

• Verbal commitment

• Individual sense of responsibility

29

• Organizations trying to change a culture often rely on their employees to implement the change

30

• Organization must:• Communicate implementation plans

to reduce cynicism and skepticism• Expose real motives• Involve key members of the

organization

31

• Vision 2015 includes commitment that by 2015:• ESC will serve a growing body of students• Generate a smaller carbon footprint• Provide a full array of studies and degree

programs related to the environment and sustainability

• Model environmentally sensitive behavior in communities across the state

• ESC will also play an active role within SUNY as an advocate for sustainability in higher education.

32

• Written commitment through Vision 2015• Financial commitment through hiring of

Sustainability Director• Inception of Sustainability Certificate and

other environmental/sustainability programs/degrees

• Failure to succeed will result in loss of credibility, wasted resources and finances, and negative impact on students interested in sustainability studies

33

Provide an atmosphere where the future can actually be “envisioned” and “visualized” rather the just discussed and imagined by painting a picture of the desired results.

34

• Internal• External• Marketing Plan

35

• Talent of ESC Students:• Advertising• Web-based technologies• Psychology• Sociology• Art• Business Related disciplines:• Mass-communication• Marketing

36

37

38

Short Term Long Term

• We have developed some suggestions that can be applied:• At little cost to the college• With use of resources

already available• Require small cultural

changes

• Any “green” plan should be sustainable in the long run:• Through implementation of

cost-saving initiatives• Imaginative use of new

resources• Complete culture change

39

• Make Recycling bins more visible

• Static Cling reminders to turn off lights/can be produced internally

• Student Access to paper shredding bins

• Designate sustainability bulletin board (visible and maintained)

• Book exchange (already on ANGEL) more visible and promoted

• ESC Environmental Sustainability website link on MyESC and ANGEL homepages

40

• Encourage Faculty to accept email/online submission of assignments

• Advertise benefits of NYC water and encourage students to refill water bottles (home/school)

• Option to receive learning contracts and grade assessments via email

41

• Partner with building to ensure that recycling is being done

• Explore possibility of janitorial service retrofitting bathrooms

• Bike Room in existing space

• Print management and copy control software (50% potential savings per year if change to double-sided printing)

42

• Implement Student recycling program (Ink, toner, battery) and use $$ to make Green Program sustainable

• Publish statistics to bring knowledge to students to encourage habit changes

43

• New, Innovative approach:• Collaboration of classes for credit• Incorporate sustainability philosophy into

curriculum throughout these disciplines• Advertising• Web-based technologies• Psychology• Sociology• Art• Business related disciplines• Marketing• Mass-communication
