Excretion

What is EXCRETION?

Process where the organism eliminates metabolic wastes and unwanted chemicals from its system.

Insect Body

FUNCTIONS OF THE EXCRETORY SYSTEM IN INSECTS

*Problems insects face in their environments* Losing water because of the size/volume ratio of being small.

1. Controlling the ionic balance of the body fluidsa. Freshwater insects tend to lose ions to the environment.b. Insects in salt water tend to gain ions2.

So, the excretion help insect to gain or remove ions in certain condition.

Cont. . .

In insects most excretory products are excreted into the gut lumen and eliminated along with faecal matter.

Eliminating excess water and other unwanted chemicals that may be ingested and enter the body fluids, such as plant poisons and excess salts.

Structure of Excretion organ in Insect

Malpighian TubulesNephrocytes- cells that sieve the heamolmph

for product that they metabolizeFat bodies- loose or compact aggregation of

cells.Oenocytes – the cell of haemocoel, epidemis

or fat body with many function. Rectum – the posterior part of hindgut.

*but the major organ of excretion is Malphian tubules

Malpighian tubules

Malpigian tubules are found in the postrerior

region of insect.

The Malpighian tubules are surrounded by

muscles.

Produce the primary urine while the hindgut

produces the secondary or final urine.

General mode of action

Pre-urine is formed in the tubules.Nitrogenous waste and electrolytes are transport though

the tubules wall.Urea and amino acid are though to diffuse though the

wall.Ions like sodium and potassium are transported by active

pump mechanisms.Water follow thereafter.Pre urine along with digested food, merge in hindgutAt this time, uric acid precipitates out.Sodium and potassium ion are actively absorbed by

rectum along with water via osmosis. Uric acid if left to mix with feces, and excreted.
