OurveryownMilkyWaycouldbehometoagianttunnelinspacetime.

Atleast,thatswhattheauthorsofanewstudyhaveproposed.Accordingtotheteam,acollaborationbetweenIndian,Italian,andNorthAmericanresearchersattheInternationalSchoolforAdvancedStudies(SISSA)inItaly,thecentralhaloofourgalaxymayharborenoughdarkmattertosupportthecreationandsustenanceofastableandnavigableshortcuttoadistantregionofspacetimeaphenomenonknownasawormhole.

WormholeswerefirstconceptualizedbyAlbertEinsteinandNathanRosenin1935.Farfrombeingfodderforsciencefiction,thetwoscientistsinsteadproposedtheirideaasawaytogetaroundtheideaofblackholesingularities.Ratherthancreatingaknotofinfinitedensity,EinsteinandRosenthought,theheftyenergyinherentinsuchamassivebodywoulddistortspacetimetosuchanextentthatitbentoveronitself,allowingabridgetoformbetweentwodistantareasoftheUniverse.Alas,thesewormholeswouldbeextremelyunstableandwouldrequireenormousamountsofnegativeenergytoremainopen.

Agraphicofthestructureofatheorizedwormhole(NASA)

ButaccordingtotheteamatSISSA,largeamountsofdarkmattercouldprovidethisfuel.Usingamodelofdarkmattersabundancethatisbasedontherotationcurvesofotherspiralgalaxies,theresearchersfoundthatthedistributionofdarkmatterintheMilkyWayproducedsolutionsingeneralrelativitythatwould,theoretically,allowastablewormholetoarise.

PauloSalucci,anastrophysicistonthetheteamfromSISSA,explained:IfwecombinethemapofthedarkmatterintheMilkyWaywiththemostrecentBigBangmodeltoexplaintheuniverseandwehypothesisetheexistenceofspacetimetunnels,whatwegetisthatourgalaxycouldreallycontainoneofthesetunnels,andthatthetunnelcouldevenbethesizeofthegalaxyitself.Hecontinued,Buttheresmore.Wecouldeventravelthroughthistunnel,since,basedonourcalculations,itcouldbenavigable.JustliketheoneweveallseenintherecentfilmInterstellar.

Ofcourse,SalucciandtheotherresearcherswereworkingonthisprojectlongbeforeInterstellarwasreleased,buttheirresultdoeslendsometheoreticalsupporttotheideasinthefilmideasthatwerealsofacttestedandrevisedbyphysicsguruKipThorneofCaltech.

Theauthorsbelievethattheirresultreinforcestheimportanceofdiscerningthetruenatureofdarkmatter.AccordingtoSalucci,Darkmattermaybeanotherdimension,perhapsevenamajorgalactictransportsystem.Inanycase,wereallyneedtostartaskingourselveswhatitis.

Itisimportanttounderstandthatthisispurelyamathematicalresult.Indeed,suchawormholemaybetheroreticallypossiblebutthatdoesntmeanitsprobable.Salucciventured,Obviouslywerenotclaimingthatourgalaxyisdefinitelyawormhole,butsimplythat,accordingtotheoreticalmodels,thishypothesisisapossibility.

TheresearcherswentontoexplainthattheirideacouldbetestedexperimentallybycomparingourownMilkyWay,aspiralgalaxy,withanearbygalaxyofadifferenttype.Bycomparingthedarkmatterdistributionsbetweenthetwogalaxies,scientistswouldpotentiallybeabletousegeneralrelativitytoprobedifferencesintheirspacetimedynamics.

Realistically,thetechnologythatwouldallowresearcherstodothatisalongwayoff.Butneverfear,science(andscifi)fansyoucanstillcheckouttheteamswormholesimulationintheanimationbelow,watchthemovieifyouhaventalready,and/orgetyourhandsonacopyofKipThornesbook,TheScienceofInterstellar.
