Every day, we always have things to throw into the garbage bin. These are things that we do not want to use or keep anymore. They may be used bottles, leftover food, papers, rags and tins.

In many small towns garbage is brought by trucks to open dumps. Here it is burnt or left to rot. These open dumps attract a lot of flies and rats. If the wind blows in your direction, the smell would be very unpleasant.

Garbage is also taken to landfills. Most garbage from big town and cities is disposed of in this way. Landfills are not as smelly as open dumps because workers use tractors to cover the garbage with layers of earth. When a landfill is full, it looks like a small hill and we can plant trees on it to make it beautiful.

Another way to dispose of rubbish is to bury or burn it. For many of us who live in kampung and rural areas, garbage trucks do not come to collect it. We usually dig a big hole and dump it there. Either we burn it or leave it to rot.

Finally garbage from most big and modern cities in the world like Kuala Lumpur goes to gigantic incinerators. An incinerator looks like a factory with tall chimneys. Glass, paper, plastic and metal are separated from the garbage goes into furnaces and are burned.
