ENGINEERING 339 – SENIOR DESIGN

• Build an amphibious air cushion vehicle• Should seat two passengers• Two engines: one for thrust, another for

lift.• Approximately 12 x 6 ft, triangular shape• Lift engine will duct air into skirt using air

splitters

Project Description

Design Requirements• Approximately 6.5 horsepower lift engine• Approximately 13 horsepower thrust engine• 26 inch diameter lift fan• 48 inch diameter thrust propeller• Hull will be constructed of extruded polystyrene

foam and marine plywood• Fiberglass coating on outer hull and ducts• Cable-controlled throttle• Be able to support 400 pound payload

Questions?

Lift Fan Design• 26 in. fan diameter• Four blade design• Constructed out of three 1 in. thick

pine boards• Blades with varied “angle of attack”

for maximum efficiency

Lift Fan Angle of Attack

Thrust Propeller Design• 48 in. propeller diameter• Two blade design• Constructed out of five 1 in. thick

pine boards• Blades with varied “angle of attack”

for maximum efficiency• Analyzed to confirm ideal operation

Propeller Analysis

Propeller Angle of Attack

Craft Balance Issues• Center of gravity will be determined

using Autodesk Inventor• Components will be placed

strategically to balance craft• Weights will be added for static

balance if necessary

Duct Construction• Thrust duct will be constructed by

cutting polystyrene sheets at a large radius

• Duct will then be wrapped and glued into final shape, and sanded

• Lift duct will be built into hull, using marine plywood
