Engaging Learners Online
Lucy Mercia SWSI E-Learning Mentor
What is Moodle?
• Moodle is the Learning Management System or Learning Platform within South Western Sydney Institute (SWSI)
• You can communicate, collaborate, complete learning activities, and access resources online in one place 24/7.
Who is using Moodle?
How do we engage learners online?
I will focus on three ways learners engage with activities that are created,
• within Moodle
• externally, and linked into Moodle
• within a toolbox that is linked to Moodle
Please NOTE, that the course level which is in Moodle, is of AQTF II
19572-Certificate II in Hairdressing , 17351-Certificate II in Nail Technology &
17352-Certificate II in Make-Up Services
Activities created within Moodle
The Moodle has 23 tools that you can use and choose from. I will focus on four types,
•Quizzes
•Forums
•Assignments
•Feedback/Surveys
Quizzes within Moodle
The quiz tool allows you to create all types of quizzes ranging from,
• True or False
• Multiple Choice
• Cloze http://swsi.moodle.com.au/mod/quiz/attempt.php?id=15555
The Forum
How I use the Forum within Moodle!
I use the Forum as a discussion board,
to discuss a topic or to collaborate
students thoughts about a particular unit.

• Online texthttp://swsi.moodle.com.au/mod/assignment/view.php?id=20980
•Audio Recordinghttp://swsi.moodle.com.au/mod/assignment/view.php?id=27182
Feedback / Surveys
There are two tools that capture feedback and surveys.
I have used the feedback tool to engage learners in providing their thoughts about using Moodle.
