3000 B.C. – 1000 B.C.

• Egypt is said to have the 1st great art style

• 3 purposes for art• Art for the home• Art for the gods• Art for the dead

• There were strict rules the artists had to follow

• Paintings had to have • Side view of the feet• Front view of the shoulders• Side view of the head• Front view of one eye

• Their gods were the combination of animal forms and human forms.

• This shows the god Annubis with the head of a jackal mummifying the king

• Annubis is weighing the heart of the dead• Larger figures were considered more important

than smaller figures

• They used a grid to exactly measure the size of the figures

• Painting was often narrative which means it told a story. This painting shows a cow being slaughtered and then taken to the king to be eaten.

• This painting shows the king doing a little hunting while in his boat. His queen and his servant are with him

Ankh

• This is an Egyptian symbol that means life.

• You would find it in many paintings

• Egyptian sculpture also had many rules.

• No emotion• Block like• Fists clinched• Basic positions like

sitting or standing• Web of stone

• He came into power when he was 8 or 9 and died 10 years later. His death was caused by a blow to the head.

• The body was dried in salt

• Then soaked in oils

• Wrapped in mummy cloth

• Coated with wax

• Face painted on it

• The body was then placed in a stone box called a sarcophagus

• The Egyptians had a strong belief in the afterlife

• They called their soul ka

• They built an entire city for the dead called a necropolis

• The dead enjoyed life just like they did in their earthly life
