    Despite advances in modern medicine, cancer is still themajor cause of mortality in both developing and developedcountries. Search for safer and more effective chemopreven-tion and treatment strategy is a need for the improvementof patient care in the field. Prevention may be more effectiveand less costly because cancer is largely a preventable diseasewhich could be attributed to a greater extent to lifestyle.Dietary phytochemicals have been used for the treatment ofcancer throughout history due to their safety, low toxicity, andgeneral availability. Population based studies suggest that areduced risk of cancer is associated with high consumptionof vegetables and fruits. Promising phytochemicals not onlydisrupt aberrant signaling pathways leading to cancer butalso synergize with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Thus,the cancer chemoprevention and therapeutic potential ofnaturally occurring phytochemicals are of great interest. Inthis special issue we have collected many interesting originalresearch articles and reviews that provide solid evidence tosupport the application of phytochemicals or dietary agentsin prevention and treatment of cancer.

    This special issue contains 3 review articles and 9 originalpeer-reviewed papers. A. M. Harrison et al. performed asystematic review of the biomedical literature for the use ofphytochemicals for management of cancer therapy pain inhuman subjects; X.-Y. Chen et al. explored the molecularmechanisms underlying the antimetastatic activity of black

    rice anthocyanins and identified its molecular targets inHER2+ breast cancer cells; the study by Y. Zeng et al.reports that Southwest China (especially Yunnan and Tibet)is the center of lowest mortality of cancers in China basedon coevolution between human’s anticancer activities andfunctional foods from crop origin center; M. Sugata et al.studied the anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities ofTaiwanese purple-fleshed sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas L.Lam.) extracts; R. Moo-Puc et al. investigated the antipro-liferative activity of bonediol, an alkyl catechol isolatedfrom the Mayan medicinal plant Bonellia macrocarpa againsthuman prostate tumor cells; B. Moyo and S. Mukanganyamademonstrate the antiproliferative potential of T. welwitschiiextract on Jurkat T cells; C.-J. Tai et al. report the potentialof ethanolic extract of Taiwanofungus camphoratus (Antrodiacamphorata) to enhance the cytotoxicity of cisplatin and dox-orubicin on human hepatocellular carcinoma cells; G. Wanget al. explored the molecular mechanism of total flavonoidsextracted fromCotinus coggygria against glioblastoma cancerin vitro and in vivo;M.N.Mallick et al. studied the anticanceractivity of hydroalcoholic extract of Picrorhiza kurroa and itsfractions;M. F. AbuBakar et al. demonstrate that theGarciniadulcis fruit extract induced cytotoxicity and apoptosis inHepG2 liver cancer cells; G. Weng et al. reported the cur-cumin enhanced busulfan-induced apoptosis in leukemiastem-like KG1a cells via downregulating the expression of

    survivin; S. Kumar and J. Kim in their review discusspotency and selectivity of PLK-1-targeted inhibitors and theirmolecular interactions with PLK-1 domains.

    In conclusion, this special issue discussed the potentialanticancer phytochemicals and dietary agents, their molec-ular targets, and their mechanisms of actions. The under-standing of molecular mechanism of a specific plant derivedcompound against a particular type of cancer will lead tothe invention of novel drug and drug targets for therapeuticintervention.
