Economic Recovery SnapshotWeek of June 29, 2020
Proactive Recovery
As we gradually return to work, the partnerships
we have forged over the last few years are more
important than ever.
In the face of pandemic and social unrest,
representatives from the Arapahoe/Douglas
Workforce Development Board,
Arapahoe/Douglas Works!, local and regional
economic development and chamber partners,
business and industry associations, educators and
other stakeholders are working together to ensure
a full economic recovery.
We cooperate so that our businesses can compete!
National Outlook
We have never really ‘shut down’ our economy
before, so it is difficult to predict the duration of
recovery.
National unemployment in May 2020 went down
1.4%. Though the Bureau of Labor Statistics
indicated both April and May rates may be
artificially low due primarily to a 12-15% decline
in the number of responses, the rate did decline
in May.
State & Metro Denver Outlook
Recovery Progression
The line graph shows two things:
1. New unemployment claims continue to go down.
2. Continued claims have gone down 2,805 between May 9 and June 6. This is now
a trend, and suggests people are beginning to return to work.
The waterfall chart on the right shows continued claims by week over week change.
Current Registrants at Arapahoe/Douglas Works!
Customer Base
These graphs show the Connecting Colorado registrants in greater metro Denver. These are people being
served by the workforce system in the region, including Arapahoe/Douglas Works!
Notes:
• There are presently 102,890 registrants in Connecting Colorado in greater metro Denver
• There is duplication because the system assigns up to four occupation codes, depending on skills
Reabsorption By Occupational Grouping
Here, negative numbers are good
because they show the percent
reduction in in the number of job
seekers from the prior week.
For example, the number of job
seekers in the personal care and
service occupation group has
gone down by 4.2% from the prior
week (from 4,706 the prior week
to 4,516 this week).
The numbers are especially
encouraging for food preparation
and serving occupations which
moved from 11,942 registered job
seekers last week down to 11,516
job seekers this week.
Current Supply/DemandThis graph shows the
number of registrants in
Connecting Colorado (blue
bars, same as the bar graph
on the last slide), and the
number of active unique job
postings by occupational
family during the last 30
days in greater metro
Denver.
By looking at the imbalances
– those areas where
demand exceeds supply, we
can stay informed about how
we can best target workforce
development funds to
optimize business-relevant
outcomes.
Continued Labor ShortagesThis graph is taken from the one on the last slide. It gives a stark view of the labor shortages being
experienced right now. It is difference between the point-in-time number of job seekers available through the
workforce system and unique active job postings in the last thirty days by occupation family. As a result of
discussions with several stakeholders, who felt the number of job listings over the past 30 days gives the
viewer a better perspective, the timeframe on listings was changed from the seven days reflected last week.
Computer Occupation Shortages
This bar graph shows the
same thing as the previous
slide, except that it drills down
into computer occupations,
which is the grouping with the
greatest labor shortage.
For example, we would read,
“In greater metro Denver,
there are 5,465 more job
postings for Software
Developers, Applications than
there are people to fill those
jobs.”
