EU28 HIGHLIGHTS

A large majority of Europeans across all Member States (85%) see it as important tohelp people in developing countries; 37% believe it is very important. The latter figurehas increased by 6 percentage points since 2013.

Almost two-thirds of respondents agree that tackling poverty in developing countriesshould be one of the main priorities of the EU (64%), although they are more likely to‘tend to agree’ than to ‘totally agree’. Europeans are divided as to whether tacklingpoverty in developing countries should be one of main priorities of their nationalgovernment: 45% agree with this, 51% disagree. Support for development as one ofthe main priorities of both the EU and national governments has gone down slightlysince 2013.

In spite of continuing economic uncertainty across the EU, there is strong support forincreasing development aid in almost all Member States. Most Europeans believe aidshould be increased either up to (52%) or beyond (15%) promised levels.

Health is seen as the most pressing challenge for the future of developing countries(39%), followed by peace and security (36%) and education (34%).

Half of all Europeans think individuals can play a role in tackling poverty in developingcountries (50%), and almost half would be prepared to support people in developingcountries by paying more for groceries or products from those countries.

However, fewer respondents are actively committed to helping developing countries bytaking personal action (34%), with the largest group giving money to organisations thathelp developing countries (29%). Relatively few say they volunteer (6%) or arepolitically involved in helping these countries (3%).

A large majority agree that tackling poverty in developing countries also has a positiveinfluence on EU citizens (69%), is in the EU’s interest (78%), and contributes to a morepeaceful and equitable world (74%).

Volunteering is considered the most effective means of helping reduce poverty indeveloping countries (75%), followed by official aid from governments (66%) anddonating to organisations that assist developing countries (63%).

Across Europe, 12% of respondents are aware that 2015 will be the European Year forDevelopment (September 2014).
