What is the Duke UniversityTalent Identification Program?
Founded in 1980 by William Bevan, then Provost of Duke University
Duke TIP is a self-supporting non-profit educational organization dedicated to identifying and supporting academically talented youth
Since inception, over 1.8 million students have participated in our talent searches
Provides fulfilling educational opportunities through publication benefits, above-level testing and academic programs.

What we do: Identify high potential 4th and 5th graders Motivate gifted and talented students to focus on
academic achievement Encourage gifted youth to challenge themselves Provide specialized educational information and
opportunities for high-achieving students and their families
Offer optional above-level testing and assessment

Qualifications:
Students must be in the 4th OR 5th grade
Students must score at the 95th percentile or above on one of the two most recent administrations of a grade-level achievement test, approved state criterion-referenced test, or ability test. Students may also qualify with a score of 125 or above on an IQ test.

Duke TIP 4th/5th Grade Talent Search Writing Contest
– Information is mailed in November of each year– Entries are judged by various Duke faculty members and members
of the Duke TIP staff– Postmark deadline is January 31st– Monetary prizes are awarded for each grade
(5th and 6th) to the students and to their enrolling schools. 1st Prize is $250.00 2nd Prize is $100.00 3rd Prize is $25.00

On-line Benefits
Spin Me A Yarn creative writing lessons The lessons are self-paced, independent study on creative writing. There are two units: one on the basic concepts of story writing and
one on characterization. Students not only learn concepts and skills but also develop story
ideas and complete story prompts. Lessons can be completed over any length of time.
Educational Opportunity Guide (EOG) On-line The on-line edition of the EOG directory contains listings
for over 400 quality schools and summer programs. 4th/5th Grade Talent Search participants and their families
can access this guide free of charge.

Book Club Two or three books are selected per year. Students share their responses to discussion questions with other
students in a secure, online Weblog ("blog"). Students have access to interactive, online lessons in language
arts, social studies, math, and science - all suggested by the selected book.
Students are challenged to explore connections among the selected book, other books, other academic subjects, and their own experiences.
Students develop critical reading and thinking skills, along with the ability to express their ideas in writing.

EXPLORE Testing
– Duke TIP, in conjunction with ACT, offers an optional above-level testing experience to its participants
– EXPLORE is an eighth grade level test– Gives families an indication of where their gifted child stands academically– Valuable tool to evaluate curriculum needs for student– Students who score in the 99th percentile or above on the composite section
are invited to the 7th Grade Talent Search Recognition Ceremony in their state

child’s school years.

4th/5th Grade Talent Search benefits continue through the 6th grade year
Students who are eligible for free or reduced lunch are eligible for a complete fee waiver for the 4th/5th Grade Talent Search
