The Western Queen Mother rewarded Hou Yi with elixir and told him: If you and your wife share the elixir, you will both enjoy eternal life. But if only one of you takes it, that one will ascend to Heaven and become immortal

Chang E ate it on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month

Hou Yi couldn’t bear to abandon his wife, so hegave the elixir to her to preserve.

As Chang E liked eating cakes, so every year at the middle of the 8th lunar month, Hou Yi made some round cakes which looked like the moon to commemorate his wife.
