The Filmmaking Process Pre-ProductionLets start thinking about the film you want to make…BIG TIP: Link it tightly to current curriculum

MotivationWhy is this story worth telling ? What makes it unique ?

Target Who are you making the film for ?

DurationHow long will it run ? Less is more.

Script – students write their ideas down in a special way. It is called a script. Storyboard – students imagine what their animation will look like and draw it in a special way. It is called a storyboard. Limit scenes to 1 or 2.Filming Schedule – students work out how they are going to make their animation in regards to time frame and dead line. It is similar to a timetable.

Pre-Production Elements

Example Storyboard

BBC- http://www.bbc.co.uk/films/oneminutemovies/howto/

Camera Basicsuse a tripod to get the best result.

Blu-Tak makes a great tripod!

Lighting Good lighting is invisible….Get students to use the same camera, tripod, setup

position each week of filming

Low or no budget lighting1. Use natural light wherever possibleOR2. Use existing light sources- eg lamps, tv screens, computer

monitors

AudioFor first go at making animations, keep audio simple:

ie Copyright-free Music & SFX are easily found online

When students move into scripted animations, they will need a quiet place to record their dialogue.iMovie has a great live recording function so they can watch their animation as they are recoding dialogue

Narrating in Windows Photostory 3

Before you start shooting … Working in pairs works wellConduct an equipment checklist

What do you have ?What do you need ?

Understand your technology:Camera- How do you turn it on ?Batteries- How long do they last ?Stock/Memory - How many stills can be stored?

Students select/create Backdrops and charactersFrom Bluetak/paper cutouts/downloaded imagesAnd most importantly … your STORYBOARD
