District Governor Debbie’s October Message
DISTRICT 6990 SERVING SOUTHEAST FLORIDA, THE FLORIDA KEYS & GRAND BAHAMA ISLAND
Fellow District 6990 Rotarians:
This month, we need to dedicate ourselves to helping our fellow Rotarians and their
families and neighbors recover from Hurricane Matthew – especially our friends on
Grand Bahama Island. As of now, they are still without power and it might be up to
three months before they get power back as we have heard they need to replace 1000
poles. The GBI water plant provided water initially and will close this week as water
has been restored.
At the bottom of this email, below the signature line is an email I sent right after the hurricane to all Club
Presidents and AGs. Hopefully they shared this info with each of you. In addition, many of us have
friends on Haiti and Nassau so I have also included information from my classmate, DG Haresh Ram-
chandani in D7020, on how to help those areas. As we get more information, we will continue to dissem-
inate it throughout the District.
As Rotarians, we are all continuing to change as many lives as we can, for the better. Each of us is work-
ing on the “All Star Team” through Rotary Serving Humanity.
Yours in Rotary Service, Debbie Maymon DG 2016-2017 As most of you are aware, while South Florida escaped major damage issues for the most part from Hurricane Matthew, our friends and neighbors in the Bahamas were not as lucky. We are hearing of widespread devastation in the islands. I have been getting requests for how to help. It’s too early yet for specifics on how/what we can send to GBI, but for monetary help, District 6990 does have our Robbins Fund for Disaster Relief. I just heard from AG Deborah Delancy and she reports: "Thus far, the power is off island wide, the water, the internet and cable access but we do have spo-radic cell usage Rotarians on the island will be sitting down in the next few days to do an immedi-ate assessment of items that the community might need. If you or others wish to send funds for Grand Bahama Island, please make your check payable to D6990 Robbins Fund and indicate that it’s for relief on GBI. Send your checks to our District Treasurer, Fred Sadoff (Sadoff, Fischer & Associates, Weston Corporate Centre, 2500 Weston Rd, Suite 311, Weston, FL 33331). Thanks in advance to all those that want to provide assistance to our fellow Rotarians on GBI. Debbie Maymon Rotary International District Governor 6990

This Year is the 54th Anniversary of Interact
Some Pictures of Our Two Interact Clubs: Coral Gables Senior High And Gulliver Preparatory
From October 1st-to November 6th — World Interact Week. It's that time of the year again! Every year, Rotary In-ternational celebrates World Interact week during the week of November 5th to celebrate the anniversary of the first Interact club founded in 1962. Interact gives students ages 12-18 the chance to make a real difference while having fun. Every Interact club carries out two service projects a year: one that helps their school or community and one that promotes international understanding. Clubs meet at least twice a month and are sponsored by their local Rotary club. When you sponsor an Interact club, you’re helping young people

OCTOBER IS ECONOMIC AND COMMUNITY
DEVELOPMENT MONTH
Worldwide, 836 million people live in extreme poverty, according to the United Nations. Rotarians worldwide are committed to reducing poverty by using their skills in projects that provide vocational training and that strengthen local entrepreneurs and community leaders, particularly women, in im-poverished communities.
Here are just a few of examples, from Rotary Showcase, of members taking action:
The Rotary Club of Islamabad Mid Town, in Pakistan, established a vocational center to provide train-ing for orphan girls with courses such as sewing, flower making, glass painting, and beautician skills. Successful students also receive help selling their work to earn an income.
The Rotary Club of Bislig, in Surigao del Sur, Philippines, trained unemployed parents to bake and decorate cakes and cure ham to help them to support their families.
The Rotary Club of Dhaka North West, in Bangladesh, built a computer learning center, starting with a single computer in 2002, which has provided training to more than 1,000 students. Many of them have found jobs as a result.
Observe Economic and Community Development Month in October by checking the Rotary Service Connections blog for tips, resources, and success stories to inspire your club or district to plan a pro-ject that will strengthen your community.
Rotary's World Polio Day Livestream Event
October 24 is World Polio Day, which recognizes the global progress made
against a disease that at its height crippled over 100 children per week and now has been reduced to
fewer than 100 cases per year. World Polio Day serves as a reaffirmation of the global commitment to
eradicate this childhood disease.

Host Hospitality Night. An event not to be missed, see Atlanta through the warm southern hospital-ity of Georgian Rotarians. Convention goers from all over the world rate this event as one of the high-lights of attending an International Convention. Meet your local hosts, taste the local food, and enjoy the local culture.
Gone With the Wind. Enjoy a private screening in the fabulous Fox Theatre. Originally designed to be the headquarters for Atlanta’s Shriners, it was modeled after the ancient temples of the Far East with soaring domes, minarets, gold leaf details, and exquisite trompe l’oeil art. However, the cost soon sur-passed what the Shriners could bear and it was bought by a movie mogul who built movie palaces across the country in the 1920’s. While the Fox Theater has had a rocky history, today it is a beloved site for the-ater and performances.
Dinner at the College Football Hall of Fame. In withdrawal after 5-6 months of your favorite col-lege football team not playing? Visit the College Football Hall of Fame - located in the heart of Atlanta’s sports, entertainment and tourism district. The College Football Hall of Fame is a 94,000+ square foot fa-cility of exhibit and event space, interactive displays and a 45-yard indoor football field.
Dinner at the World of Coca-Cola. Kiss the Coca-Cola Polar Bear, view the vault of the “secret for-mula”, learn the early beginnings of Coca-Cola (they don’t call it Coke for no reason), and why Coca-Cola is one of the leading brands in the world with a penetration of 44% world-wide.
All these and MORE can be part of your trip to the Atlanta Convention, June 10-14, 2017. REGISTRATION IS $340 and WILL INCREASE DECEMBER 15! REGISTER NOW:

Under the leadership of President Patricia Peraita, The Rotary Club of Key Biscayne has en-
thusiastically embraced the END POLIO NOW campaign in the island community.
The campaign began with a presentation by Ann Owens, local businesswoman, member of
the Rotary Club of Key Biscayne and herself a polio survivor recalling those horrific days
when polio was the scourge of the nation and urging all to embrace the efforts to end the dis-
ease.
Following that moving kick-off, specially designed collection boxes were given to club members to put
in local businesses.
The local newspaper did numerous articles and carried the message of the campaign and let the Islanders
know how they could participate.
The Interact Club of MAST Academy, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Key Biscayne, conducted a week
-end long collection campaign at the major shopping plaza on the Key.
The campaign culminated with a presentation by District 6990 Polio Plus Chairperson, Margarita Larti-
tegui, recalling her experience in a Rotary National Immunization Day in India and updating the club and
community visitors on the progress of the END POLIO NOW global campaign.
The Rotary Club of Key Biscayne raised over $18,000.00 in the two week campaign and will send to
funds to The Rotary Foundation to be matched 3 to 1 by the Bill & Linda Gates Foundation.
