Even to other residents of Litfield County,
Kent can be a bit of a mystery. Whi is odd,
since its one of the towns with the most to
offer to visitors and locals alike.
In addition to the excellent public grammar sool,
there are three highly rated private high sools. e
Housatonic River flows through it, intersecting with
notable waterfalls, at Bulls Bridge and Kent Falls State
Park (featured on our cover in this issue; Katie Washer,
in the tie-dyed shirt, was there playing Frisbee with
her friend, Anika Bonwets). e Appalaian Trail
runs through it and runners from the Tri-state region
run through it as well, for the annual Pumpkin Run
(featured in this issue). But it is in some ways remote
from other towns in the area. Whether youre a visitorfrom a distant town or corner of the state, or a resident
of the nearby Northwest Corner, there is mu to
discover in Kent.

Tis is a rae bike, Charles Egervari said, standing beside his sleek, low bikeand wearing serious raing leathers. Im not a ruiser. Tis is a high-powered,fast bike. It puts out a lot of horsepower and has a lot of torque. It does very well
on raetras, and on roads like the ones around here. Were always looking forthe urviest, most winding roads.
I ride with a group that has similar high-powered bikes. We like DutcessCounty, and we like it here. Tis is always our last stop, and then we go home.

Thinking small when it comes to retailBy Sam Rathbun
Here, the retail world is made up ofsmall businesses run by loal peoplewho are atering to the needs of their
neighbors. As at an earlier, simplertime, that sometimes means a shopperhas to go to several stores to get all
his or her errands done. But peopledont seem to mind; some even enjoythe opportunity it gives them to make
a shopping trip into an outing and aane to see some friends.Jacie Bergman, owner of Farm
Country Soup, is one of these smallbusiness owners. Loated in the
In todays day and age, big box stores rule the retail world. Drive

building that used to house Stroebels
bakery, Bergman elebrated her one-year anniversary in Kent in 2014.
Her shop provides the ommunity
with fresh artisan soups as well asspeialty foods and baked goods.Everything is farm-to-table andis freshly made ea morning by
Bergman and her staff.
She wasnt always a small-businessowner. Before she started FarmCountry, delivering soup to stores
and homes around the ri-state area, she spent the ealier part of her areer
delivering babies. She worked as a
delivery nurse in hospitals in NewYork and then moved up here to workat Sharon Hospital.
One day, she deided shed had
enough and wanted to try somethingnew. Shed always been an avidef, so she began making soups and
other prepared foods, selling them atfarmers markets around the area.
Her business has been growing, with a kiten in the Berkshires
where mu of the food is made fordelivery to area groery stores su asLaBonnes in Salisbury.
When asked what she loves most
about being a small business owner,Bergman replied, Te onnetionwith the people. Im able to use loal
farms and produers, and people knowwhere the food omes from. Sharing
