Digital PortfoliosDigital PortfoliosStatement of Need
Students of the 21st century are adept at utilizing technology for entertainment, communication, and learning. While schools continue to press the need
for reflective learners, we have not provided our students with a purpose for reflection or a means
through which to demonstrate reflection. Incorporating a reflective digital portfolio into the
school culture would play to the students’ strengths, interests, and satisfy the schools’ need for demonstrating understanding and learning.
Digital PortfoliosDigital Portfolios• Baseline Data
– 100% of Freshmen are enrolled in an Intro To Technology course
– 12% of our teacher currently require digital projects– 100% of our rooms are wired for internet access– Over 75 computers are available to our students for use– Preliminary surveys have shown that over 80% of our
students have one or more computers at home– Surveys also indicate that nearly all of our students are
highly proficient at utilizing one or more programs, other than the Internet.
Digital PortfoliosDigital PortfoliosWhat are they?
A collection of a student’s work that reflects what has been learned and accomplished over a period of time.
Why make portfolios digital?1. Digital portfolios can store multimedia 2. Are easily updated 3. Are accessible to everyone - at any time 4. And enhance the use of vital technological
abilities.
Digital PortfoliosDigital PortfoliosWhat is its purpose?
“Through the use of portfolios, teachers and students can develop a shared understanding of
what constitutes quality work, and acquire a common language for evaluating students’
accomplishments. Maintaining portfolios will provide specific evidence as to what the students
have attempted, achieved, and learned during their high school career as well as offer the
pragmatic experience necessary to compete in today’s technological society”. (CGHS)
