The International Institute of Ammonia

Refrigeration (IIAR)’s vision is to be

recognized as the world’s leading advocate

for the safe, reliable and efficient use of

ammonia and other natural refrigerants for

industrial applications.

• “It is difficult to justify the cost coming to a US conference

presented in English or even translated.”

• VISAs! “This is a real problem this year. The South

Americans can't get them. They were denied! It's easier to go

to Chillventa than the IIAR!”

• “Fire Fighting departments really need knowledge, it does not

exist in Latin America”

IIAR Conferences in South America

• 7 conferences in South America in the past 4 years.

• The majority of participants employed by industrial

refrigeration end-users.

• Average attendance 140 but as high as 240.

Ammonia Spill?

We first considered a full blown event including an

Ammonia spill and response training;

but no availability of resources at this time,

much more planning and coordination that is needed

for such an event.

• CO2 and cascade systems

• Food freezing and handling

• The initial event theme of “Safety”, “Efficiency” and

IIAR “Standard’s awareness”

• Many plants will be undergoing some modification

to comply with increasing International Trade and

quality standards

• Manufacturers see the need to have IIAR’s

sponsorship to keep the spirit of education and

uniform application of best practices

The meeting succeeded beyond the organizers

expectations:

Planned for 50 attendees and got 130.

85% of the attendees were end-users.

All the contractors in Ecuador invited.

Included local organizations such as ATEC which

represents Ecuador’s refrigeration and AC industries

• Chile initiative to create national guidelines for the use of ammonia

refrigeration for operations and maintenance, system design, education and

emergency response.

• This effort started as a result of recent incidents in Chile involving ammonia

refrigeration systems which highlighted the need for a greater emphasis on

ammonia safety in the industry.

Future Development

There is a need for industrial refrigeration training

globally. The IIAR has initiated training programs in

regions of significant growth including China, India

and Latin America.
