L/O – To examine the impact of industrial change on a town

Starter – Has Hong Kong got better or worse over the last 50 years or even in your life time?

Investigating Manchester 1700-1900• The Industrial Revolution was a

period of great economic and social change, especially for towns like Manchester which grew rapidly.

• The town became a symbol of both imperial splendour and Victorian squalor.

• Your task is to analyse how Manchester changed and ask whether it was a change for the better or worse.

Analysing Images of Manchester• Firstly, you will be using your

source analysis skills to examine the impact of industrial change on Manchester.

• You will be ‘inferring’ what the pictures suggest about Manchester i.e.

‘This image suggests that…’‘We can tell from … that…’

‘From this image we can infer that…’‘It doesn’t say so, but …must be true because…’

Copy the following questions down to answer for each image:

1.) What does the source show? What are the main features?

2.) Any evidence of ways in which life was changing?

3.) Any evidence of things not changing or getting worse?

4.) Is the image a positive or negative representation of Manchester?

B – View of Manchester in 1851

How is life changing for people in Manchester?

• You have 3 questions you want answers to:

1. Are the homes of the industrial workers good to live in?

2. Are workers fairly treated in the factories?

3. Is life getting better for the people of Manchester?

Writing up your finished article• Now it is time to write up your

finished article. Remember, this is an assessed piece of work focusing on your use of the Sources.

• Remember to:– Write in the first person– Must refer to the sources to back-up

your article.– High marks go to those who evaluate

the sources as well as quote from them.– Evaluating means asking how reliable

and useful the Sources are.

Examining Change• In order to experience how

towns change, it is necessary to examine all the main events that occurred in Manchester.

• We then need to ask whether they made life better or worse for people living there.

• Cut out and stick the events onto your lifelines according to whether you think they made life better or worse.
