They should be installed in accordance with those specifications and Sto’s instructions. Sto Corp. disclaims all, and assumes no, liability for on-site inspections, for its products applied improperly, or by unqualified persons or entities, or as part of an improperly designed or constructed building, for the nonperformance of adjacent building components or assemblies, of for other construction activities beyond Sto’s control. Improper use of Sto products or use as part of an improperly designed or constructed larger assembly or building may result in serious damage to Sto products, and to the structure of the building or its components.
STO CORP. Structural:
Design structural wall for maximum allowable deflection, normal to the plane of the wall, of L/240. Ultimate tested wind load resistance: +175 psf (8.37 kPa). Apply appropriate safety factor as required by code. Higher ultimate loads can be achieved with adequate stiffness (and sheathing attachment for frame walls) of supporting construction. Refer to Tech Hotline No. 0894-E.
All trim and projecting architectural features must have a minimum 1:2 (27 degree) slope. A minimum of ¾” (19mm) XPS insulation board must remain if areveal is cut in the insulation board. A minimum of 1 ½” thickness of XPS board is needed when a reveal is specified.
Construct a site built mock-up using materials and sub-trades associated with the project to verify installation, sequencing, detailing, and aesthetics.
Fire:
Minimum required thickness of XPS foam plastic insulation board is 1” (25mm). Maximum allowable thickness is 6” (152mm) on types I, II, III, or IV construction. If walls are required to have an hourly fire-resistance rating, the maximum allowable thickness is 2” (51mm) over maximum 2-hour rated nonload bearing frame walls, or 6” over, (concrete or masonry) mass walls. Refer to ICC-ESR 1748 for more information.
XPS insulation board has a service temperature limit of 165°F (74°C). The use of dark colors (Light Reflectance Value of less than 20) is not recommended.
Moisture Protection:
Provide minimum 6” (152mm) clearance above landscaped areas (soil, grass, and other non-paved surfaces), and a minimum of 1” (25.4mm) above finished grade areas, (pavement, patios, sidewalks...) as required by code. StoTherm® ci XPS systems are not intended for use below grade.
Direct incidental moisture to the exterior a maximum of every third floor.
Weep spacing at window, door, floor line and other similar penetrations are to be determined by the Design Professional.
Refer to StoTherm® ci XPS Specifications, Product Bulletins, Technical Hotlines, Sto Installation Manuals, and Maintenance Guides for the most complete andcurrent information. See Tech Hotline Nos. 0403 BSc, 0603 BSc for important information on detailing and moisture control in wall assemblies.
Joints:
Provide minimum ¾” (19mm) wide joints in StoTherm® ci where they exist in the substrate or supporting construction, where the cladding adjoins dissimilar construction or materials, at changes in building height, at expansion, control, and cold joints in construction, and at floor lines in multi-level wood frame construction. Provide minimum of ½” (13mm) wide perimeter sealant joints at all penetrations through the wall (windows, doors, mechanical, electrical, plumbing penetrations, etc...). Specify a compatible backer rod and sealant that has been evaluated in accordance with ASTM C1382 and meets 50%elongation to seal joints and penetration.
Impact Resistance:
For ultra-high-Impact resistance install the Sto Armor Mat Mesh and Sto Mesh, as referenced in the specification, a minimum of 6’-0” (1.8m) above finished grade for areas accessible to pedestrian traffic, as well as areas exposed to abnormal stress or impact. Indicate areas with higher than “Standard” impact resistance on contract drawings.
Codes:
Refer to ICC Evaluation Report ESR No. 1748 for building code compliance information. The final design of the project is ultimately up to the Design Professional. Sto accepts no liability for the design, engineering, or workmanship of any project. The notes provided are in addition to Sto Details, Specifications, and other items provided on the Stocorp.com website.
