RACE Coalition Circular Design Theme

“Onze  missie  is  dat  in  2020  alle  designers  in  Nederland  rekening  houdt  met  de  circulaire  design  principes  in  het  design  proces.  Van  (industrieel)  productdesigners,  tot  architecten  tot  modeontwerpers  en  servicedesign.”

The plan

Our Six Principles

•  All  materials  are  cycled  infinitely  in  either  technical  or  biological  cycles  •  All  energy  is  derived  from  renewable  or  otherwise  sustainable  sources  •  Human  acNviNes  support  ecosystems  and  the  rebuilding  of  natural  capital  •  Human  acNviNes  support  a  healthy  and  cohesive  society  and  culture  •  Human  acNviNes  support  human  health  and  happiness  •  Resources  are  used  to  generate  value  (financial  and  other  forms)

What is designing for a circular world?

“When  designing  for  a  circular  world,  many  ques0ons  s0ll  need  to  be  answered.      But  it's  also  crucial  for  designers  to  broaden  the  design  scope  so  they’re  not  just  looking  at  a  standalone  product.      Instead,  they  need  to  consider  the  product  in  an  “end-‐to-‐end”  way—that  is,  within  the  context  of  a  global  system  of  resources.”

GUEST SPEAKERSTODAY’S AGENDA But, what are those ‘circular design principles’?

Case 1: Electric bicycle E-‐bike  sales  have  steady  increased  over  the  past  years  as  they  become  more  popular  with  the  long  distance  commuter  as  well  as  the  ageing  popula0on.  Design  a  new  line  of  electric  bicycles  for  Dutch  market  leader  Gazelle.

Design Cases

Case 2: Textiles French  Toast  -‐  one  of  America’s  leading  school  uniform  sellers  -‐is  redesigning  their  apparel  line  for  the  next  school  year  and  looking  to  reduce  the  impact  of  their  carbon  footprint  (coTon  produc0on  is  energy  and  water  intensive).  Create  a  proposal  for  this  apparel  line.

Case 3: Furniture A  new  furniture  company  is  star0ng  up.    They  want  to  quickly  make  a  name  for  themselves  in  the  furniture  world  and  have  asked  you  to  create  designs  for  a  line  of  office  furniture.
