TOYOTAFORMULA1 TEAMTOYOTAFORMULA1 TEAM
Aspiring after the long-cherished desire of winning 1st place at the F1 Japanese Grand Prix at Fuji Speedway with the TF107 chassis
DENSO supports a broad range of motor sports.
DENSO supports Team Toyota as a technical sponsor, having entered the world’s pre-eminent racing on four wheels, Formula One (F1). DENSO provides spark plugs specially made for F1 engines and in 2004 became a corporate sponsor of the Panasonic TOYOTA Racing F1 Team. DENSO supports the team by making full use of technology that is unique to DENSO, including spark plugs, radiators, oil coolers, and alternators.
TOYOTA fulfilled a dream they had held for years by entering F1 competition in 2002. TOYOTA took the 6th place prize in their racing debut at the Australian Grand Prix and showed their ability to the world.
In 2005, with the goal of standing on the winner’s podium, TOYOTA achieved this goal by their second race at the Malaysia Grand Prix. Reaping the fruits of the prior three years, they made great strides and won 4th place in the Constructor’s composite rankings. Despite further expected leaps for 2006, they could not fare better than the previous year and ended up in 6th place overall in the Constructor’s composite rankings.
In the upcoming 2007 season, with their more advanced TF107 specification F1 chassis, TOYOTA aspires for another success surpassing the 2005 season and to accomplish their long-cherished desire - winning 1st place at the F1 Japanese Grand Prix at Fuji Speedway in 2007.

Aiming at the pinnacle of motorcycling, DENSO is full-throttle.
The FIM Road Racing World Grand Prix (WGP) was started by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) in 1949 and embodies the world’s top motorcycle racing. Initially, this racing was formerly categorized into seven classes, but today it is classified into three. MotoGP is the top class, followed by GP-250cc and GP-125cc.
MotoGP, formerly the GP-500cc class that was renamed in 2002, races monster motorcycles with the greatest features of four-cycle engines equipped with an upper limit of 800cc engine displacement. A single machine can harness 200 horsepower, and maximum speeds easily surpass 300 km/h.
DENSO has supported WGP-125cc and WGP-250cc since 2001. Many winners have been supported by DENSO, including the winning debut of the Iridium Plug at the Suzuka Grand Prix in April 2001.
DENSO has entered the MotoGP class with HONDA’s team LCR since 2006. In 2007, DENSO continues to support HONDA LCR, together with Tomohiro Koyama who transferred to Team KTM, and Hiroshi Aoyama of Team KTM. They will again be engaged in heated races for the podium in all classes this year.

Aiming for WRC 2007 victory with new SUBARU ImprezaBestowed with the title “World Championship” by the
Fédération Internationale de Automobile (FIA), the World Rally Championship (WRC) is another premier world racing crown, as is F1. Different from formula race cars that have each part individually designed for racing, WRC uses commercially available stock cars. Rallies take place on local streets in a variety of places, such as snow-covered roads in the Alps, safari trails in deserts, or mountainous roads in Mexico, and not on a circuit course.
DENSO supports the Subaru World Rally Team, winning the most WRC championships among Japanese manufacturers. In 2005, DENSO IRIDIUM PLUG was first equipped in the Subaru Impreza WRC, winning its debut race, which was the third race of the season and held in Mexico. With Petter Solberg as its ace driver in 2005, the team won three races in its attempt to recapture the Driver’s Championship it last held in 2003, but unfortunately ended the season in 2nd place. In the following year of 2006, the team marked “best time” no less than 38 times that season and demonstrated their speed, although they did not win a single race. In 2007, the team is aiming for victory together with a brilliant young driver, Chris Atkinson.

Aiming at victory with DENSO SARD SC430Super GT is one category of motor
racing, where more than 20 types of supercars, modified commercial vehicles (GT cars), participate. In 1994, the Japan GT Championship (JGTC) was established, but has been called the Super GT since 2005, expanding beyond Japan and restarting as an international series race. The Super GT has grown to be one of the most popular motor sports in Japan, with an average attendance of 45,000 at events, and attracts approximately 320,000 people in total during the year. DENSO supports TOYOTA Team SARD that races in the
GT500 class. In 1989, TOYOTA Team SARD was established as one of the Toyota Works Teams, and has won four victories in the Japan GT Championship and the Super GT, including Rounds 1 and 4 at Fuji Speedway in 1997, Round 7 at Autopolis in 2003, and Round 3 at Sepang Circuit (Malaysia), in 2004. In 2005, TOYOTA Team SARD entered the TOKACHI 24 Hours race as LEXUS Team SARD in a hybrid vehicle, the DENSO LEXUS GS450h, which was the first hybrid vehicle to be entered in such a race. The team completed the race with superb style.

F1 is called the world’s greatest automo-bile racing. Of course, as its technology sig-nificantly evolves, performance also is ever evolving. It is no exaggeration to state that F1 cars are the crowning achievement of leading-edge engineering and materials. In recent F1 grand prix racing, various reg-ulations change every season over a broad range of aspects including the engine, chas-sis, and tires. In these circumstances of F1 racing, first place in a race cannot be won only by a driver’s technique anymore, not to mention the F1 championship title. I think that first place can become a reality only when all the various sections of teams, tech-nologies, and suppliers, function in a bal-anced manner. In that sense, the TOYOTA F1 Team has been racing in an ideal envir-onment because they can develop F1 cars with all the technologies integrated, includ-ing manufacturing all the parts of an engine and the chassis in one location, and per-forming aerodynamic experiments. Engi-neers from each section meet face-to-face every day, and can hold discussions while using the actual chassis and engine. This provides a big advantage for accelerating development. I am responsible as the director of technol-ogy coordination of this team, and to com-municate with TMG in Germany, the Toyota Higashi-Fuji Technical Center, and with each supplier, in order to make strides with-in the entire F1 Project. I am very satisfied with the development capabilities of DEN-SO and other suppliers, and very much ap-preciate their cooperative structures, too. Development of F1 cars can never really be said to be complete, because it is evolving every day by injections of cutting-edge tech-
nology. Such develop-ment efforts produce re-sults with manufacturing skills that drivers can rely on and to which they en-trust their lives, and with the reliability of the manu-facturers and people in-volved in the development. I believe this relationship of trust improves the com-pleteness of cars and brings good results.
An F1 engine turns at a maximum 19,000 rpm, which is approximately two times fast-er than passenger cars, and generates more than 700 horsepower. It is not difficult to imagine that an F1 car engine is subject to extremely tough conditions since it must maintain such a high rpm rate all through a race. In the past few years, the parts that electronically control functions have been regulated and improvement of drivability is required more than ever. That means it is becoming more important to develop an en-gine while seeking speed, durability, and driver-friendliness. For that reason, each and every part of the engine is required to have extreme precision and reliability. Need-less to say, the relationship of trust with sup-pliers is very important. DENSO provides us with alternators and oil coolers, and de-velops radiators together with us from the primary steps of development. Moreover, with regard to spark plugs, our team has been racing with DENSO’s F1 SPARK PLUGS since our entry into the world of F1 in 2002. This is because we can realize high performance with DENSO SPARK PLUGS under the most severe use condi-tions without any trouble.
Although the spark plugs are very small parts in size, their performance and reliabili-ty are realized and based on the accumula-tion of daily efforts made by many research-ers, engineers, and operators at manufacturing sites. This is exactly the same as the development of an F1 car. I find DENSO applying technologies culti-vated from F1 racing to their various prod-ucts, and feel that both companies receive benefits from our F1 Project. The DENSO IRIDIUM PLUG that realized ignition perfor-mance and durability of F1 racing is repre-sentative of products that have been cre-ated from such a philosophy. This is why F1 grand prix racing is “the driving laboratory.”
With a high level of perfection, the completion of an F1 car is accomplished with total reliance upon all the people and manufacturers engaged in its development
Not only F1 cars, but also excellent things are built from the accumulation of effort

Petter SolbergSUBARU World Rally Team Driver
The WRC (World Rally Championship) is extremely competitive compared with other motor sports. You’re darting and jumping. You’re in both the fiercest heat, and snow blizzards. You’re racing for hundreds of kilo-meters while controlling a machine under these kinds of the severest of conditions. You are constantly pushing yourself and your machine to the absolute limit. So there is not just ordinary stress on your machine, to be sure. What does it take to become a WRC cham-pion? It requires a variety of skills. It takes driving technique, extreme force of will, and total concentration. It also requires a fast and well-balanced machine. And, team ef-fort. When all three of these come together, then you can win for the first time. However, you can’t win with just a fast machine. The most important winning factor is absolute confidence that you can race on toward the goal. You never really know what might hap-pen while racing under these severest of conditions. And, the rally ends the moment your machine breaks down. All your efforts up to that moment amount to nothing. Therefore, high reliability is demanded from each and every part that comprises your machine. In particular, spark plugs are said to be the heart of every engine and are criti-cal components of the machine. DENSO IR-IDIUM RACING are excellent parts that fully meet these demands. The Subaru World Rally Team (SWRT) has achieved brilliant results more than a few times in the past thanks to support from the excellent reliability of their machine. I can definitely say that these excellent re-sults would not have been possible without this reliability. Also, we provide feedback for production vehicles using the top level ex-pertise that we have cultivated. The WRC is, so to speak, a laboratory for the latest
technology.
In order to win the WRC, you must first build the ideal machine. For this reason, as a team, we repeat countless tests day and night to create this superlative machine. Being a good rally driver doesn’t simply mean being fast. It also demands the ability to develop a car. The deciding factor is the movement of the machine. However, movement and acceler-ation response are closely connected. For example, controlling a machine to move ex-actly as you have imagined while driving in an extreme situation requires superb accel-erator work, rather than steering. You want an engine that takes off from a partially open throttle, with dramatic acceleration. In other words, if acceleration response is good, then you will be able to not only go fast, but also control the complicated move-ments of the machine more easily. A ma-chine that does not have constant accelera-tion response is like a high-strung horse. It’s dangerous, and not for riding. The SWRT is a prestigious team that has been making excellent efforts in the WRC for the last dozen years. Their machines have been improving, and so the potential of their machines has also been increasing. In particular, the standard acceleration re-sponse that I wanted has been fully ach-ieved. In doing this, the success of the en-gine’s overall rpm in no small way has been due to the DENSO IRIDIUM RACING that reliably fire over and over again. From now on, I will devote all my energy to becoming the driver’s champion along with my trusted and excellent staff, my machine, and my suppliers.
The rally ends the moment your machine breaks down.
If you have good acceleration response, controlling the machine's motion and traction becomes much easier.
Racing straight towards the goal:The most important requirement for victory.

I’m obsessed with wondering, “Man, just how crazy I can be?” in D1 where more ad-vanced techniques are required year after year, and the competition has become the most severe.Being crazy is a compliment in our world. When driving at crazy approach speeds and crazy angles, Mr. Keiichi Tsuchiya the head judge, laughs aloud and says, “Hah! He is really crazy!” The audience reacts to my performance with cheers and applause. I’m glad when they clap for me and tell me things like, “you were pretty cool that last time.” Otherwise, I’ve got to think it’s all over if nobody tells me stuff like that. So, I don’t forget to be crazy, as a service to the fans. On one occasion, I stood up on top of the Aurora Vision, this huge display screen, when I was introduced to the audience. An-other time, I performed my rodeo driving while I was being introduced. If I don’t give such performances to the audience, it’s not me. I want to cheer myself up by showing my performances to as wide an audience as possible. I’m also doing this because I want to be an unforgettable driver and have
everybody think I’m crazy. Needless to say, I’m also ob-sessed with competition, since I am a professional driver and I’m required to produce results. I search for my own unique driving style using approach speed, drift angle, and in turns. Since a ma-chine used in D1 staging re-quires relatively strong control, not just by steering but also by working the accelerator, engine response is extremely critical. If my machine does not truly re-spond exactly with how I work the accelerator pedal, the ma-
chine will immediately spin out on the course, and I will have no confidence to drive it. In recent D1 staging, it has become com-mon to start drifting the vehicle at speeds approaching 200 km/h, which is called high-speed drifting. This results in not passing the qualification round only by differences in approach speeds of only 1 or 2 km/h. Ac-cordingly, acceleration performance has be-come extremely important. Now we are in an age when engine power must be opti-mized by generating even one or two addi-tional horsepower. In this respect, spark plugs are one of the fundamental parts that cannot fail us D1 drivers, and DENSO IRIDIUM RACING have sufficient performance to meet our re-quirements.
In D1 staging, engines are used heavily. Since vehicles move at an angle and do not drive straight ahead into the wind, I think D1 staging creates very severe conditions, not only for the engine itself, but also everything that corresponds to it. When following driv-ers ahead of us, we have to drive the way they do. So we cannot avoid reaching the engine rpm limit. In such conditions, low-performance plugs may have an electrode damaged after reaching the rpm limit sever-al times, or may even melt due to poor dur-ability after being weakened by knocking. This is really a problem. So, it’s nearly im-possible for us to use spark plugs that we can’t rely on. If we keep winning each round up to the fi-nals, we need to run the course many times. Spark plugs can’t be replaced every time be-fore each run, so durability is extremely im-portant. I want my plugs to last at least three days, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I
use DENSO IRIDIUM RACING without changing them for three days, and I have no trouble. Whenever the engine condition is bad, I check the spark plugs. A computer controls fuel intake now, but we can roughly tell by checking the spark plug when a piston ring is melted away. When I was using an en-gine before this one and I felt the engine power had decreased, I checked the spark plugs. As expected, the spark plug in cylin-der 3 had been burnt differently from the oth-ers. When I measured each cylinder’s com-pression, only cylinder 3 had weak results. For something that can’t be found just in numbers, you can find it by checking the spark plugs. I think the spark plugs are the only place where we can visually check what’s going on inside the combustion chambers.D1 staging is getting more severe than ever before. In this situation, I really appreciate the surefire spark and high durability of DENSO IRIDIUM RACING. When my ma-chine breaks down, it’s all over for me. Good quality spark ignition generates im-provements in both power and response. For the fans who support me, I refine all my performances including drifting, and I do drive crazy, hoping to become the series champion together with my reliable team staff, machine, and my suppliers.

Clean acceleration when stepping on the gas – what could be better?
Fujio YoshimuraDirector of YOSHIMURA SUZUKI with the JOMO Team. Repre-sentative Director and CEO of YOSHIMURA JAPAN Co., Ltd. Vic-tory in the 2005 Suzuka 300 km Endurance Race, followed by 1st place in the third race of the 2006 ALL-JAPAN ROAD RACE CHAMPIONSHIP, and 3rd place in the 2006 Suzuka 300 km Endur-ance Race, etc. Leading the “world’s strongest private team” in or-der to realize their deeply desired hope of winning the Suzuka Eight-Hour World Endurance Championship Race.
When did the relationship between YOSH-IMURA and DENSO start?
Yoshimura: It’s been very long time, since the time I was in the U.S.A. I guess it was around 1976. My father, (the late Pop Yoshi-mura) had gone to the U.S. before me. The partnership was already firmly established when I got there. Since then, we have main-tained a relationship of trust. Of course, DENSO SPARK PLUGS were equipped on the machine that won the first Suzuka Eight-Hour World Endurance Championship Race in 1978.
You have been doing very well again this year, continuing your results of last year. Where do you find the secret of your speed?
Yoshimura: One of the main factors is the engine being in good condition. It is essen-tial to increase power. In that respect, DEN-SO has made a great effort in many ways. We feedback race data to DENSO, they make new proposals based on the data, and then we use the results again in the race. We both repeat this again and again.
How do you value the DENSO IRIDIUM PLUGS that you are currently using?
Yoshimura: Excellent. When the throttle is opened, the engine revs up cleanly. What else do you need? The ST600 class that we have entered since 2006 requires a broader range of engine rpm. We don’t look
for features in a full-throttle condition, but in-stead in conditions of partial throttle pres-sure; that is, when decelerating and then ac-celerating again, slowly. This depends on the spark plug features. After all, the most important thing in racing is reliability. And when you have even a small concern, it ap-pears in the results of the race. Actually, we haven’t had any trouble caused by our spark plugs.
Please give general drivers some advice (from Director Yoshimura).
Yoshimura: The first thing you realize when you change your spark plugs to DENSO IRI-DIUM PLUGS is good start-up performance. If a plug gives good start-up performance, it also has good performance overall. An-other key point is low fuel consumption, which is also important during the Suzuka Eight-Hour World Endurance Championship Race. Above all, the DENSO IRIDIUM PLUG is the plug that can provide this kind of stable performance.
Legendary winning vehicle of the Suzuka 8 Hour World Endurance Championship Race was also equipped with DENSO SPARK PLUGS

The U-shaped groove on the ground electrode insures that the inside surface
area is large enough to generate the flame kernel. This shape enables lower voltage needed to cause the spark and results in excellent ignitability without increasing the size of the spark gap. (excluding IUF27A, IUF31A, IU24A and IU31A)
A terminal nut is attached that fits with most of the world’s spark plug cables. Please remove the nut for installations that do not require one. (The terminal nuts on the IWM and IK-G types are solid parts and cannot be removed.)
All plugs include a highly reliable, 5,000 ohm monolithic resistor specification to reduce electromagnetic noise that may affect electronic devices. (For all plug types)
The process used to mount the iridium tip is a highly reliable “All-around Laser Welding” process that is able to withstand all kinds of driving conditions. (For all plug types)
The plug housing is plated with burnished nickel, the same as plugs used for racing. It is highly resistant to corrosion and rust even while touring in continually rainy weather and during motocross events. (Low-heat range types excluded)
Insulator ProjectionThe projection of the insulator is optimally designed based on each plug's
thermal value. This corresponds to requirements unique to thermal value, such as self-cleaning ability at lower thermal values, and heat resistance at higher thermal values. (For all plug types)
Projected Center Electrode
In order to improve ignitability, the center electrode protrudes more than with conventional type plugs. This improves both acceleration response time and performance.(Only with: IU31, IUH24, IUH27, IX22, IX24, IX27, IUF22, IUF24, IWF22, IWF24, IWF27, IW24, IW27, IW29, IW31, and IW34)
Using a new iridium alloy with a very high melting point, the tip of the electrode can be made
very fine. This enables the reduction of voltage necessary to cause the spark, and greatly improves ignitability. Moreover, the special iridium alloy used was developed by DENSO with the following patented processes (for all types): Japan (2877035, 2921524, 3000955), U.K. (2302367), U.S.A. Taper-cut Ground ElectrodeThe tip of the ground electrode is cut to a fine taper to reduce the adverse effects of quenching, which greatly improves fuel ignitability. Also, because of the streamlined, taper-cut shape, the fuel-air
mixture spreads more evenly in the gap, resulting in steady, reliable igniting of combustion.(excluding IUF27A, IUF31A, IU24A, IU27A, IU31A, IY24, IY27 & IY31)

Note: Mileage measured using a chassis dynamo; actual driving results under normal conditions may vary.
I want the next level of response and power for my baby.
is recommended for the following kind of user.
For drivers that care about mileage. It’s the car that I drive every day, so I want less fuel consumption.
By using a 0.4mm diameter iridium alloy center electrode and a special ground electrode, realizes spark performance unseen until now. It steadily gives a high level of response under a variety of driving conditions. The result? Increased acceleration and torque compared to regular plugs.
has a low required voltage and a high ignitability, resulting in less misfiring and no spark, the outcome being a dramatic improvement in combustion. Engine output is thus increased. The findings of a bench test using a motorcycle engine to show the improved combustion from is shown on the below. Compared to normal plugs, a 0.5ps (1.4%) improvement is seen in output at 110 km/h.
best demonstrates its performance improvement during acceleration. has a 0.4 mm diameter iridium center electrode and a specially shaped ground electrode. These features combine to achieve higher ignitability and require lower spark voltage than ever before. This enables high-response driving with fewer misfires than under higher required voltage spark conditions, and fewer misfires when ignitability is difficult. As a result, acceleration improves in comparison with normal plugs.
Get more power with an optimal fuel cycle. Increased response and acceleration performance.
To increase ignitability, the important point is to let the flame kernel caused by the spark to grow to a large size. Normally, this can be accomplishing by widening the spark gap, however this causes spark voltage to increase, which has the opposite effect. uses DENSO very own U-Groove ground electrode to realize a superb ignitability while maintaining spark voltage at low levels.
With DENSO’s very own U-Groove ground electrode for better spark performance.
The 0.4mm center electrode increases output under various driving conditions.
Even during idling ignition is assured, with less fuel consumption.
If you use your car on a daily basis, you may be concerned about fuel consumption. is one solution.

The power produced by the 0.4mm dia. iridium center electrode is unmatched by other plugs. The graph below compares the resulting power when is installed compared to other high performance plugs. Using a 0.4mm dia. fine center electrode, there is more power compared to 0.8mm and 2.5 mm dia. plugs. This is what makes the difference in acceleration and in your lap time.
The good ignitability from the fine electrode (0.4 mm) of draws out much more performance from the engine. Comparing a normal plug (W20FS-U) with an (IWF22) on a 2-cycle 50cc engine, fuel consumption improved from 41.74 km/L 43.69 km/L, an improvement of about 5%.

① SparkA spark in thelocation mostconducive tosparking.
② The Flame Kernel FormsA portion of thefuel-air mix isactivated fromthe dischargedenergy, and asmall flamekernel forms.
③ The Flame kernel GrowsThe flamekernel growsdespite havingenergy suckedaway by thecenter andgroundelectrodes.
④ IgnitionThe flamekernel grows, accelerating, until it spreadsexplosively incombustion.
Electrodes have a quenching (cooling) affect (where the heat of the ignitedflame kernel is taken away by the electrode). This cooling affect is greaterwith larger electrodes, sometimes causing the ignition to stop short of thestage in Figure 4. To improve ignitability, the contact area between theelectrode and the flame kernel must be reduced. Improved ignitability iswhy electrodes have been made fine as possible.
Plug electrodes conventionally have used nickel and platinum. These were not pure metals, but alloys containing other metals. Depending on the composition of the alloy, the matrixmaterial’s properties can be maximized. Using the same approach, iridium is alloyed withrhodium. The rhodium layer covers the iridium, improving the properties of the iridium. Thisiridium/rhodium technology was recognized by the Patent Offices of Japan and the UK, andin January 1999, a patent was granted in each respective country. (Patent Number - Japan:2877035, UK: 2302367). Because DENSO had this patented technology, DENSO was ableto make dia. of the iridium down to 0.4mm. The most important things for plug performanceare ignitability and spark ability. To make the electrode as fine as possible is the goal ofspark plug manufacturers worldwide, and DENSO has taken the lead, succeeding thecommercializing the 0.4mm dia. center electrode plug.

Required voltage
The finer the electrode, the more concentrated the electrical potentialand the stronger the electrical field strength becomes, leading to a lowerrequired voltage. This results in a steady combustion in a variety ofdriving conditions, and better starting and acceleration for the engine.

Economical and long lasting!Economical
and long lasting!
All specification types include an embedded, highly reliable, monolithic resistor to eliminate electromagnetic noise interference from all kinds of electronic devices.
The ground electrode has a platinum tip, from DENSO’s experience with platinum plugs. This greatly moderates electrode wear and insures high durability.
Using DENSO’s exclusive iridium alloy having a very high melting point, the tip of the center electrode can be shaped very thin and fine, reducing spark voltage requirements and greatly improving ignitability.
Lasting high performance, long life and high response

, through its 0.4mm diameter iridium center electrode, has realized high ignition performance and low spark voltage at levels heretofore unseen. Because of this, there is less non-firing under high spark voltage conditions and fewer misfires under conditions where ignition is difficult, permitting operation with a high level of response under a variety of conditions. As a result, acceleration has been improved.
Through steady ignitability, acceleration performance is greatly improved.

Specifications Include TerminalIncluded with the plug comes with a terminal nut compatible to the Nology Hot Wire and most plug cords around the world. Please remove for vehicle types that do not require terminals. (Some plugs have solid terminals. Please refer to the list.)
All IRIDIUM RACING plugs specify a resistor, and contain a highly reliable monolithic-type resistor that blocks noise that may affect electronic devices. (IW06 has no resistor.)
Burnished nickel plating on the housing, a high level of corrosion resistance has been realized. Also, because the amount on the threads is low, the damage to the female thread in the cylinder is reduced.
The center electrode tip is able to be made fine using a new iridium alloy with a high melting point. The required voltage is reduced, and ignitability is improved greatly. This new iridium alloy’s material composition, manufacturing method *1, and welding method *2 have been patented.
*1. The addition of rhodium to improve high temperature oxidation resistance: Japan Patent 2877035, UK Patent 2302367, People's Republic of China Patent 961022841, Republic of Korea Patent 0292083, U.S.A. Patent 6094000/6262522
*2. Using a melting method instead of the conventional sintering method. Japan Patent 3000955, U.S.A. Patent 5977695
All-platinum Ground Electrode
Compared to the nickel alloy used in conventional spark plugs, the high melting point of platinum will reduce such problems as ground electrode melting and wear. Also, the 0.8mm platinum alloy is welded on and gapped without any bending, reducing residual stress and increasing durability.

Reliability and durability, backed by the racing results of major drivers such as Sorberg, Stoner & Koyama
It’s the age of iridium electrodes. Discover more acceleration with 0.4 mm DENSO Racing Plugs. DENSO would like you to try the 0.4 mm advantage. Use and experience a ride like never before.
With an ultra-fine, 0.4 mm diameter center electrode, plugs are the realization of superb ignition performance and reguired voltage at unparalleled levels. Misfires have been controlled and will allow you to have steadily high levels of response and increased acceleration.
Generally, electrodes that project into the combustion chamber have better ignitability and have better performance. However, because of more exposure to high temperature combustion gases and because ground electrode becomes longer, heat resistance and durability decrease. The higher the level of tuning, the greater the need is to use a less projecting type.
As the level of tuning is increased, so does the need for higher heat range.
Through superb ignitability and reguired voltage, non-firing and misfires under a variety of conditions has been greatly reduced. As a result, combustion conditions have improved dramatically, increasing enginen output.

uses a platinum tip for the ground electrode and a high strength fine insulator for racing. Also,
there is a silicone coating on the insulator giving it an increased resistance to carbon fouling. However, because of the withdrawn spark position, the has the high ignitability of the two. Instead, because of the “extension” in engine revolution felt by many at high revolutions, it is popular with customers who race. Choose “ ” for response and “ ” for high revolutions. is particularly popular on the circuit scene.
We sometimes hear that “ is too sensitive to setting changes.” However, the flip side to sensitivity is that “the response to setting changes is fast
and easier,” and during races, we hear that it makes setting changes easier. If is used, it should become possible to draw out more performance from your vehicle.
Improved combustion efficiency will clean your exhaust emission! Fuel consumption will improve too! With the superior ignitability of ultra-thin electrodes (0.4 mm), combustion efficiency will be improved.Cleaner Exhaust EmissionsCO and CO2 levels will decrease in the “EURO III” emissions test to be implemented in the feature.Improved MileageA great bonus for long-distance drivers.
Even for those who are concerned about the environment, we recommend Iridium Power.

What kind of vehicles are surface gap plugs used for?
Q.7
A
Q.8
A
These are plugs developed for racing, and there are many people who use these plugs in the All-Japan Road Race
Championship JSB1000 class and in drag racing. Because the ground electrode is gone, there are the following advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages[1] When the engine is tuned so that the compression ratio is
increased, these can avoid interference with the piston.[2] Because there are no excess projections into the combustion
chamber, the combustion efficiency at high revolutions is improved.[3] Difficulties due to the ground electrode can be prevented.
Disadvantages[1] The ignitability becomes worse, and thus feeling and response
at low and mid-revolutions deteriorates.[2] For peak engine characteristics demanded under the most
severe operating conditions. In the popular ST600 class, many drivers use a plug with a ground electrode.
How is the compatibility with plug cords such as Nology?
There are no particular issues with compatibility. In fact, there are some cord manufactures who sell products
“especially for iridium plugs.”
When changing plugs, is there any need to change the settings?
Q.9
A
Q.10
A
For normal vehicles, there is no need to change the settings. It is advisable to reset vehicles with modified
exhaust systems, though in most cases adjusting the air screw is sufficient. (Except for racing carburetors such as FCRs)
Is there a way to tell them apart when replacing them?
This can be done by confirming the level of wear (the gap width) on the ground electrode. DENSO’s Iridium
electrodes are different from conventional products in that their center electrodes hardly wear, and because of this it is better to check for wear on the ground electrode.
about Plug PerformanceQ&A about Plug PerformanceQ&A
This is possible. The reason: because of the 0.4mm center electrode in Iridium Power and Iridium Tough plugs, they
have a lower spark voltage compared to double, triple, and quadruple electrode plugs. Please refer to the Standard Resistor Model Quick Chart.
Spark VoltageThe thinner the electrode is, the stronger the electrical field is. Because the electrical field affects spark voltage, a thinner electrode lowers spark voltage. If each type of electrode shape is modeled as shown below, Iridium Tough has a lower voltage than double electrode plugs.
IgnitabilityThe more the contact area between the flame kernel and the electrode is minimized, the smaller the cooling action from the electrodes and the better ignitability is. Because of the 0.4mm center electrode, the contact area between the flame kernel and the electrode is small, resulting in excellent ignitability.
Service lifetime of plugsThe service lifetime of a spark plug may be shortened due to driving conditions or ignition properties when used in a vehicle equipped with a simultaneous ignition system (plus-minus discharge and D-DL methods). Please ask your dealer to check if your vehicle is equipped with a simultaneous ignition system. The simultaneous ignition system fires the plug at the top dead center point not only of the compression stroke, but also the exhaust stroke.

The vehicle seems to be running worse now that I’ve installed them?
In most cases there is a problem with the vehicle. Scooters are often run for long periods of time without maintenance,
and it is common to see them with richer fuel-air mixtures from dirty air cleaners. Our investigations have found that these vehicles tend to be susceptible to carbon fouling, and when replacing plugs also remember to inspect and clean the air cleaner. The effectiveness of the change should become even more apparent.

IGNITION TECH Q&A
DENSO has and to meet the needs of tuned and racing engines. For the engine
described in the question, the right plug should be around IK (IQ) 22, 24, or 27. Here is an introduction to using the different types of the Iridium Series on racing engines. : NA Tuned (Short distance racing), Turbo tuned where a regular turbine has been tuned to increase the boost. (01 Type): The 01 Type is usually called the slant ground electrode type. If your car is turbo tuned where the turbine has been replaced and the boost pressure is above 1.2 to 1.3 kg/cm2, an 01 type is needed. Also, if a NA tuned engine with comparatively high vibration (4 cylinders) is to be raced over long distances, switching to this type can increase the reliability of the ground electrodes. (02 Type): The 02 type (flat ground type) is appropriate for higher output engines than the 01 type, but because the spark position is withdrawn compared to the 01 type, only consider this plug for racing applications.

It’s difficult to give a heat range based on going from 150PS to 200PS alone, and it’s best if you judge the condition of your
current plugs and judge for yourself, but as a general rule, for boost pressures between 1.0 and 1.2 kg/cm2, an IK24 should be sufficient. During the winter, IK22 should improve starting and low speed feel. The heat range is different depending on how the engine has been tuned and how it’s used; using an increase in heat range of 1 or 2 as a starting point, decide on a heat range, always looking at the condition of your current plugs.
In the rotary engines in some old Mazda’s on the T (Trailing) side there is a plug, the terminal nut for which must be
removed. In others, the removal of the T side plug terminal nut is necessary as in the Cosmo (HB22S). DENSO has for rotary engines, with a variety of heat ranges from #27 to #35. for Rotary Engines come standard with terminal nuts.
We frequently hear that is resistant to carbon fouling compared to plugs from other companies.
However, there is no way that they are a 100% solution, and it’s good to know these techniques to prevent carbon fouling.[1] When rolling in the race, close the carburetor’s low needle or
pinch the fuel pipe with your hand to prevent excess fuel from entering the engine.
[2] By pumping the accelerator during rolling, a rich fuel air mixture goes into the engine, making it easier for carbon fouling to occur. Operate the accelerator gently.
[3] If carbon fouling happens while running with the throttle fully open, this could mean that the heat range is too low or that the fuel mix is to rich. Consult with a kart shop to find the optimum setting.
The following suggestions are only guidelines. First, regarding thermal value, if the boost pressure is 1.4 or lower, please
choose No. 24. For thermal values of 1.5 or above, we recommend using No. 27. Thermal value may vary depending on the engine type and tuning, so please decide after checking the burned condition of the plugs.Next, regarding the type of plug, if the boost pressure is 1.7 or lower, either or can be used. As a guideline, if you often drive with lower speeds or in town, is recommended since it is resistant to carbon fouling. If you are racing in 400-meter runs or often drive at high speeds, we recommend . When the boost pressure exceeds 1.7, it causes misfiring at high rpm. In such cases, it is necessary to use .
The DENSO Iridium Series have the world’s thinnest 0.4 mm iridium center electrodes, but because the durability of the
iridium alloy developed by DENSO is higher that even platinum, which has in the past been said to be the most durable, it can be said that it’s the best plug for tuned engines. Specifically, it has the following advantages:[1] Iridium alloy has a melting point and hardness above that of
platinum, even turbo, with its high combustion temperature, can be used with confidence. Also, even when used with powerful ignition systems such as MSD and MDI, these plugs are even more reliable than platinum racing plugs.
[2] The issue for high boost engines is that misfiring that occurs at high revolutions. The fine electrodes of the Iridium series require a lower voltage, allowing the energy generated by the coil to be sparked without losses. It can be said the 0.4 mm dia. DENSO
series are a strong ally of tuned high-boost turbo systems.

In 4-cycle engines, a spark is produced for every 2 revolutions of the crankshaft, resulting in explosion and
combustion in the engine. In 2-cycle engines, a spark is produced for each revolution of the crankshaft, resulting in explosion and engine combustion in the engine. This simple comparison may lead you to conclude that 2-cycle engines simply have twice the wear; however wear is made up of not only wear from sparking, but also wear from high temperatures (oxidation). Thus, the amount of wear depends on the driving conditions of the vehicle, how the rotations of the engine are applied (that is, how the shift is used), and whether the resulting combustion temperature is high or low.2-cycle engines have a higher level of electrode wear. This electrode wear is estimated at approximately 1.5 to 2 times that of 4-cycle engines, and plug life is also shorter with 2-cycle engines. Iridium has a high melting point; however, it will undergo wear from sparking and wear from high temperatures (oxidation). To our knowledge, 2-cycle engines are only found in 2-wheel vehicles, our recommended value in this catalog for lifetime is 3000 to 5000km. (This value is based on a variety of conditions, and, racing use may require even more frequent replacement.) From the above, it is recommended that plugs for 2-cycle engines be replaced about every 3000km. However, the condition of wear depends on operating conditions and the typical engine rpms, so it is also possible to take out the plugs occasionally to confirm the amount of electrode wear and judge when the best time is to replace the plug.
comes standard with a plug terminal (not including combined types). This is because some of the other
companies’ plug cords require a terminal, and at DENSO we decide our product specifications keeping in mind every customer.
Since the 996R, the interior of the Testastretta (narrow head) engine’s plug holes have been very narrowly machined, and
with regular plug wrenches, the socket OD hits the wall and thus the plugs cannot be fully tightened. (Not possible with a 21.5mm OD) In this case, a thin-wall plug wrench is required. [We recommend the “NB3-16SP (nepros)” or the “B3A-16SP” by KTC.]

Plugs for motorcycle vehicles with a “V” in the part number have a platinum tip welded to the ground electrode, the same
as in 4-wheel vehicles. They have more durability than Iridium Power, but do last 100,000 km. Thus we do not offer them as Iridium Tough products. You can choose the Iridium Power plug for those vehicle types with a compatible Iridium Power plug shown in the Model Chart; however, please understand that it will be not as durable.
A loud explosive “pop” pop sound can have the following two causes:
(1) An afterfiring muffler(2) Backfiring due to blowback from the carburetor If it is the same vehicle and these symptoms were not there before changing to the new plugs, the reason for this is (1) afterfiring. The causes of afterfiring are:(1) An abnormally elevated intake pressure, the combustion
becomes unsteady (during engine brake)(2) A problem with an ignition device (improper ignition timing,
misfiring)(3) The fuel-air mixture is too rich (problem with the carburetor, too
much choke)(4) The valve timing is off If the problem is during starting, (2), (3), or (4) are thought to be the reason. A specific example for (2) is “ignition timing that is off” and specific examples for (3) include “a dirty air cleaner” and “pulling the choke too much.”We often hear that Iridium plugs improve ignitability so much that people “don’t have to pull the choke to start the engine.” If you are pulling the choke to full, try pulling it to the “halfway” point and see if this solves the problem.
The “IW series” is well suited for most trial vehicles. Though these vehicles frequently use a low heat range, the heat
ranges available for starts with IW16, so choose one that matches the type of driving you do. Better accelerator response and torque can be expected with , which has excellent ignitability. Recently, with downsizing of the space to install plugs in trial vehicles, demand for miniature plugs is increasing. In these cases, try the IK types. However, the space between the plug cable and the insulator will require waterproofing.

BASIC INFORMATION FOR
PLUG (1)
DENSO spark plugs ignite your engine.
The role of spark plugs
Gasoline engines generate power from the precision-timing combustion of a fuel-air mixture of gasoline and oxygen. However, gasoline itself is relatively difficult to ignite with the precision timing required for combustion of the fuel-air mixture, even at high temperatures. The role of the spark plug is to create a spark which ignites the fuel. Since the spark plug ignites combustion, the performance of the plug determines the performance of the entire engine. The engine is often likened to the “heart of a vehicle,” and spark plugs have the significant role as the “heart of the engine.”
01
Generate a strong spark from an electrical discharge between electrodes
Spark and Ignition
When high voltage produced by the ignition system is discharged between the center electrode and ground electrode of the spark plug, the natural insulation between the two electrodes breaks down, current flows as a result of the discharge phenomenon, and an electrical spark is generated. The energy from this spark triggers the igniting and combustion of the compressed air-fuel mixture. The duration of this discharge is extremely brief (about 1/1,000 of a second) and is extraordinarily complex.
The role of the spark plug is to reliably generate a strong spark between electrodes precisely at each specific moment to create the trigger for combustion of the gaseous mixture.
The spark plug generates a flame kernel from a spark which then ignites the fuelIgniting the fuel with an electrical spark occurs because fuel particles situated between the electrodes are activated by the discharge spark to trigger a chemical reaction (oxidation), the reaction generates heat, and a flame kernel is formed. This heat ignites the surrounding air-fuel mixture until a flame core is formed that spreads combustion throughout the chamber. However, the electrodes themselves absorb heat which can extinguish the flame kernel, called the “quenching effect.” If the quenching effect between the electrodes is greater than the heat generated by the flame kernel, the flame is extinguished and combustion stops. If the plug gap is wide, the flame kernel will be larger and the quenching effect is reduced, so reliable ignition can be expected. But if the gap is too wide, a large discharge voltage becomes necessary, the limits of coil performance are exceeded, and discharge becomes impossible.

Spark plug heat dispersal
What is a spark plug’s heat range ?
How to Choose a Plug
Various circumstances such as engine conditions and driving conditions are rough measures for choosing a plug. For example, if strenuous driving is continued for a long time using normal plugs, the plug will overheat. This is why the idea of a regular plug for a regular car doesn’t work. What’s important is to inspect the condition of your current plugs, and then choose a plug accordingly.
The degree to which a spark plug disperses the heat it receives is called its "heat range". Spark plugs with a high degree of heat dispersal are called high heat range (cold type) and those with a low degree of heat dispersal are called low heat range (hot type).
This is largely determined by the temperature of the gas inside the combustion chamber and the spark plug design.
The heat range will change with the seasons.
When the air temperature is high, as in the summer, the inlet air temperature becomes higher, increasing the load on the engine. In times like this, it's better to choose a plug with a higher heat range.
The more horsepower is increased, the higher the required heat range.
If the horsepower has been increased through tuning, the increase in explosive power leads to an increase in combustion chamber temperature, making pre-ignition more likely; in such cases it is necessary to choose a plug with a higher heat range and a higher level of heat resistance.
Glossary of spark plug terms
Low heat range and high heat rangeLow heat range plugs have long insulator leg sections and the surface area affected by the flame and the gas pocket capacity are large. Also, since the heat release path from the insulator leg section to the housing is long, heat dispersal is low and the temperature of the center electrode rises easily. On the other hand, high heat range plugs have short insulator legs and the surface area affected by the flame and the gas pocket capacity are small. Also since the heat release path from the insulator leg section to the housing is short, heat dispersal is high and the temperature of the center electrode does not rise easily.
The relationship between the spark plug temperature and vehicle speed and heat rangeThere are restrictions on the temperatures at which spark plugs can be used: the lower limit is the self-cleaning temperature and the upper limit is the pre-ignition temperature.A spark plug only functions completely when its center electrode temperature is between these temperatures of about 500°C and 950°C.

Normal Carbon fouling Oil fouling
When using unleaded gasoline, the base of the insulator often becomes white or gray. The electrode may become slightly burned. When using leaded gasoline, the base of the insulator becomes light brown.
The engine runs in excellent condition when starting or driving, both at high or low speeds.
Dried carbon is deposited, covering the insulation base and electrode area.
Engine startability worsens and “misses” at low speeds. If not corrected, the engine may die often and have poor acceleration.(Nearly 90% of engine trouble from spark plugs is caused by carbon fouling or oil fouling.)
1. Inappropriate thermal value2. Engine idling for a long time, or driving
in low temperatures3. Rich air-fuel mixture4. Clogged air filter5. Delay in ignition timing
1 or 2: Use a spark plug with a thermal value that is one level lower, or adjust engine idling
3 to 5: Perform complete readjustment and tune-up
The base of the insulator and electrode become shiny black, covered with oil or gasoline.
Engine startability worsens and “misses” at low speeds. If not corrected, the engine may die often and have poor acceleration.(Nearly 90% of engine trouble from spark plugs is caused by carbon fouling or oil fouling.)
1. Oil leakage into the combustion chamber due to frictional wear of the piston rings, valve guides, or cylinder wall.
2. Rich air-fuel mixture
1. Spark plugs may become wet until the oil flow control becomes normal during pre-conditioning runs with a new engine or an engine immediately after an overhaul. In such cases, simply clean the plug and reinstall it. In other cases, the engine basically requires a complete overhaul.
2. Adjust the carburetor.

The base of the insulator will be burned and become bleach white from the heat. The electrode will also be burned and become white or dark purple. Electrodes will wear out soon.
Engine horsepower decreases and speed falls when running continuously at high speeds, driving for a long time uphill, or pulling too great a load.
1. Inappropriate thermal value of plug2. Use of low octane gasoline3. Ignition timing set too early 4. Inappropriate cooling5. Poor air-fuel mixture
1. Use a spark plug with a higher thermal value
2. Use higher octane gasoline3. Adjust the ignition timing4. Check the cooling system5. Adjust the carburetor
The electrode will be melted. In extreme cases, the base of the insulator is also melted.
This is caused by overheating. Temperatures in the combustion chamber increase rapidly, destroying not only the spark plug, but the piston head also.

2. Use higher octane gasoline3. Adjust the ignition timing4. Check the cooling system5. Adjust the carburetor
The base of the insulator has a vertical crack. The appearance of the spark plug is similar to problems with overheating or lead fouling.

When the product is installed on an altered or modified vehicle engine, the product may be struck by valves, pistons, or other parts and cause damage. Please do not drop the plug onto a floor, or similar hard surfaces. It may cause internal cracks or alter the spark gap, damaging the functions of the plug. Before using the product, please carefully read the instructions on the reverse side of the package and use the product appropriately as described.
Before changing or adjusting the plug, please switch off the engine first. Otherwise, it may cause a fire or an electrical shock.Warning
Instructions for Use
When using a plug with a terminal nut, please tighten the nut securely with a pair of pliers or a similar tool. If the terminal nut is crimped onto the plug, the nut may loosen during use due to vibration. Therefore, we recommend that you check it regularly. If the terminal nut becomes loose, please tighten it securely. If you use the plug with a loose terminal nut, it may be a cause of engine malfunction.
When using a plug with a terminal nut
If the center electrode tip becomes worn into a rounded shape, it is possible that the sparks it produces are not fully efficient, resulting in the fuel-air mixture being ignited less reliably. If this happens, the engine horsepower decreases, fuel consumption worsens, and the engine lifetime may be adversely affected. We therefore recommend the regular replacement of spark plugs.*Service lifetime is a guideline. When used in a vehicle equipped with a simultaneous ignition system or high energy coil, the service lifetime may be shorter.
*Note: Use in a small-engine vehicle, a tuning vehicle, that are usually operated under high-rpm conditions may result in a shortened lifetime of the plug.
When to replace spark plugs
The service lifetime of a spark plug may be shortened due to driving conditions or ignition properties when used in a vehicle equipped with a simultaneous ignition system (plus-minus discharge and D-DLI ). Please ask your dealer to check if your vehicle is equipped with a simultaneous ignition system.A simultaneous ignition system, as shown in the images, has two plug wires connected to a single coil.
Service Lifetime
If a thread lubricant such as grease is coated on the thread, tightening to the recommended torque is tightening too much; this has been linked to seal leakage. Do not use a thread lubricant.
Tightening more than the tightening angles and torques shown on the left could result in damage to the engine and furthermore could result in the plug coming off at the thread.

When choosing a spark plug, please confirm the specifications in your vehicle's manual, maintenance manual, and matching chart by automobile manufacturers in this book, in order to choose the appropriate plug for size and thermal value. The heat range of the plug needs to be increased, such as from No. 16 to 20 or 22, depending on the degree of tuning if your automobile has a rebuilt engine or is equipped with any of the following parts that have been modified: muffler, ignition coil, spark plug wires, turbo engine, commercial electric ignition system, NOS, etc. When the correct plug is not installed, it may generate fuel fouling, exhaust smoke, or pre-ignition, and cause failure of your automobile. Please check page 35 for the correct thermal value to use, and page 36 that lists some failure modes of spark plugs.
How to select a spark plug; failure modes
is for racing and tuning vehicles. Please choose a plug heat range that is suitable to the level of tuning, based upon the heat range of an normal plug and .Generally, electrodes that protrude into a combustion chamber have better ignitability and better performance. However, due to more exposure to high temperature
combustion gases and because the ground electrode is longer, heat resistance and durability are decreased. The higher the level of tuning, the greater need there is to use a less-projecting plug type.As the level of tuning is increased, so does the need for a higher heat range tolerance.
How to choose a racing plug
For ordinary plugs, please adjust the gap if it has widened at the time of inspecting the plug. Please adjust it to the specified gap of each automobile manufacturer. If the center electrode has become rounded, or worn only on its edges, please replace it with a new product. Please do not adjust the spark gap of any plug with a fine electrode, such as a platinum or iridium plug. Any adjustment may damage the center electrode.

Problems Caused by Fake Spark Plugs Why Power Drops and Melting Occurs
Meltdown
DENSO plug contains copper core
Fake plug is iron only
Copper is an excellent heat conductor. High temperature heat is quickly dissipated away from the center-electrode to prevent melt down.

Comparison Between GenuineDENSO and Fake Spark Plugs
The plug melts down.
Engine power drops onuphill roads and highways.
(See below)
Inconsistent sparking causes incomplete combustion. Unburned fuel forms a black sooty deposit on the spark plug, eventually leading to poor fuel economy and poor start up of the engine.
Poor heat dissipation due to the lack of a copper-core center electrode causes pre-ignition. As a result, engine power drops under highway driving or uphill driving conditions.
Continued usage of an overheated plug will damage the electrodes.
Fuel economy is diminished.
