The Apostles’ Creed

“I believe . . .”

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord:

The Apostles’ Creed

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell.

The Apostles’ Creed

The third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there he shall come to judge the living and the dead.

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in the Holy Spirit;the holy universal church;the communion of saints;the forgiveness of sins;the resurrection of the body;and the life everlasting.

Amen.

Forgotten God

“The Holy Spirit is not merely a nice addendum to the

Christian faith. He is at the heart and core

of it.”Tony Evans

“The Christian’s life in all its aspects – intellectual and ethical, devotional

and relational, upsurging in worship

and outgoing in witness – is supernatural; only the Spirit can initiate it

and sustain it.”

John 13:33My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.

John 14:1Do not let your hearts be troubled.

John 16:5-7aNow I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief. But I

tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away.

John 16:7b

Unless I go away, the Counselor will

not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

ESV/NASB = “Helper”

KJV = “Comforter”

NLT = “Advocate”

Greek NT = “one called

alongside to help”

John 14:17b-18

But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

“This physical imagery (of the Spirit being “in us”) should not be understood spatially as if the Spirit gets His mail delivered in the upper left chamber of that beating muscle in the chest.”

“Rather, the Spirit dwells in us by animating our personality, shaping our character, renewing our mind, and stirring our emotions. His presence is not a physical residence

as much as an experienced reality.”

1 Corinthians 6:19

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who

is in you, whom you have received from God?

John 16:7

But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I

go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

Why was it “for our good” that Jesus leave our world and then

from heaven send the Holy Spirit?

1. Because of WHO He is … the Holy Spirit is God!

Matthew 28:19Baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the

Holy Spirit.

Two key attributes of the Spirit:

1. As God, he is omniscient (All knowing!)

Romans 8:26-27 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

Two key attributes of the Spirit:

1. As God, he is omniscient (All knowing!

2. As God, he is omnipresent(Everywhere present!)

Matthew 28:20

And surely I am with you always,to the very end of the age.

IF Jesus is in heaven right now, how can he also be with us here on earth?

Jesus manifests his presence through the person of the Holy Spirit. Since the Spirit is God, he is omnipresent.

Which means we can live in the reality of Jesus’ presence always!

Why was it “for our good” that Jesus leave our world and then

from heaven send the Holy Spirit?

1. Because of WHO He is … the Holy Spirit is God!

2. Because of WHAT He does … the Holy Spirit is at work in us and through us and among us -24/7/365!

It was for our good that Jesus leave and send us the Holy Spirit

Without the Holy Spirit’s presence and power in our

lives, living the Christian life would

not be extremely difficult . . .

It would be impossible!
