The Bureau of Justice defines a serial killer as an individual who has killed several victims in three or more separate events. Although the terms“serial killer” and “mass murderer” are often used synonymously, criminologists distinguish the two. A serial killer is one who commits a number of murders over a long period of time, with the killings separated by often long periods of apparent normalcy, where as a mass murderer is an individual who kills several people in a single event.
This book solely focuses on data geared specifically towards serial killers and their victims, analyzing America’s nation of killers.

Illinois is the state with the highest number of both killers and victims.
Throughout our data analysis, we noticed a surge in serial killing that took place in the 1960’s, which led us to believe “Does media play a role in this?” This surge continued, skyrocketing in the 80’s. However, serial killings have drastically declined in the 2000’s and reported killings are even lower today, when media is at an all time high.

Research has uncovered that both upbringing and surroundings play a vital role in the shaping of a serial killer. What is most disturbing is how the United States has held and produced most of them. What exactly is this saying about our nation?
