ABOUT ME

BIO

My name is Daniel Campos Hull and I was born in Barcelona on the 3rd August 1989, son of a Spanish father and an English/Danish mother, I grew up in a city near Barce-lona, Sant Cugat del Vallès.

My studying career has been strongly influenced by my racing career, I started go-karting when I was 7, and thanks to the good results and a good financial backup I carried on the road to a professional driving spot on F1 or any other major series, but unfortunately I couldn’t make it. I was runner-up of Formula BMW Deutschland in 2007, raced F3 Euroseries and F3 Macau GP in 2008 and in my last year I ended up 5th in the Italian F3 in 2009.

This racing background raised an interest for engineering and car dynamics, and when I had to stop racing I began a degree in Industrial Design Engineering at ELISAVA, in which I am currently in my final year. Last semester I went on exchange to TU Delft, Netherlands, there I focused on team work, learnt good sketching techniques, and enlarged my network, meeting lots of people and learning about north-European culture.

During my final year of university I did an internship in MARSET Iluminacion, where I gained valuable experience and increased my knowledge on product development, the relationship between designers and engineers, feasibility of a product, and improved my skills on product design and 3D modelling.

SELECTED PROJECTS

SQUOVALELISAVA, 2012

A. Bertolin, D. Hull, C. Vallhonrat

This project was part of a university course from this year, I it did together with two other colleagues, and it lasted three weeks. The goal was to design a device that would improve bicycle security.

We decided to design a multifunctional device, intended to improve user’s experience by bringing in new functions to a product that has no extra functions aside of the primary one. It is focused for a daily commuter who rides for duty or leisure, and then has to park the bike for a short to mid term stay.

The main feature is that it combines a security of a U-lock with an integrated cable, and the utility of a rear rack to carry bags and personal belongings.

This project is part of a university course from this year, I did it together with another colleague for six weeks.

Our main idea was to design a family ofproducts that would work as primary packaging but also have other extra functions, such as cheese grater, garlic press, carrot slicer, and chopping board.

As we were short on time we could only develop and build the mock up of the cheese grater product, but we always thought of it as part of a family of products.

KEIRAELISAVA, 2013

D. Hull

This project is part of a university course from this year, I chose to do it by myself to have total freedom designwise. It lasted 8 weeks but in October I started working on it again to do a short serial production (around 10 units) that will be out soon.

KEIRA is all about combination and contrast, soft with rough, classic with modern, natu-ral with industrial. It’s the appropriate mix between a gentle material as wood, a tough one as steel, and agressive geometries.

SKILLS

3D MODELLING

3D models created using “PTC Pro Engineer Wildfire 5.0”, “PTC Creo 2.0” and “Solid Works”. Continuous surface solids, assemblies, exploded views, parts movement simu-lation, gear transmission analysis, rendering and picture integration.

A good render gives a very clear idea about what a product looks like, and how is the user going to use it. It can improve the whole appearance of a project, so for me it’s fundamental to spend some hours working on a final render.

SKETCHBOOK

Sketches that represent an object and give information about its shape, materials and use. They are drawn using several techniques and paper formats, with markers, fine liner, pencil and pastels to create gradients.

Sketching is the first stage of product design after researching, it is perfect to experi-ment with different shapes, as it allows you to be more creative and conceptual than a 3D model done with computer.
