Materials:

• Print-outofcalfdrawing(seepage2)• Print-outsofdottedlinepaper,1perstudent(seepage3)• Pencils• Coloredpencils• 9”x12”folderorenvelope• Tapeorputty

1.Haveyourenvelopewiththeimageinsidetapedupinthewhiteboard.Talkabouttheconceptofdrawinganimageupside-downandwhyitisahelpfullearningtool.

2.Pullouttheimagetothefirstdottedlineandusetapeorputtytoholditinplace.

3.Askstudentsaboutthelinesandshapestheysee.Begintodrawtheimageonyourwhiteboardslowly.Talkaboutthelinesandshapes,stoppingtoaskstudentswhatyoushoulddrawnextasyougo.Havestudentsfollowalongontheirownpaper,studyingtheimageastheydraw.

4.Continuetopullupsectionsandrepeatstep3untilthedrawingiscomplete.Itcanbefuntohavestudentsguesswhatthedrawingisaseachsectioniscompleted.

5.Iftime,studentsmaybegintocolorthedrawingoradddesigns.

TheBookofKellsisafamousmedievalilluminatedmanuscriptandacclaimedtobeoneofthemostbeautifulbookseverwritten.IttakesitsnamefromthevillageofKells,innorthwestIreland.Itisthoughttohavebeenproducedaround800AD.TheBookofKellscontainsthefourGospelsinLatinbasedontheVulgatetextwhichStJeromecompletedin384AD.Thebookiswrittenonvellum(preparedcalfskin)andincludeslavishdecorationandornamentation.Abstractdecorationandimagesofanimals,plants,andhumansaimtoglorifyJesus’lifeandmessage,andkeephisattributesandsymbolsconstantlyintheeyeofthereader.
