Assessment of Logan Airport Transportation Resilience

Northeastern University, Boston, MA December 2016

Lead a semester-long risk analysis of MassPort assets focusing on the security of the Boston Logan Airport in response to threat of a

major hurricane to strike Boston, MA.

Worked with colleagues in Security and Resilience M.S. Program to identified vulnerabilities, issues in governance, interconnectedness,

etc. and formally presented our findings and possible solutions to MassPort in December 2016.

Evacuation Behavior of Tohoku Tsunami and Earthquake Purdue University Dep’t of Political Science 2013-2015

Conducted background research on the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and resulting tsunami and its effects on Japan as a whole.

Synthesized information from personal interviews conducted from survivors of the Tohoku event in Watari, Miyagi Prefecture,

Japan.

Determined similarities and differences in evacuation behaviors of survivors.

Developed research question and appropriate design based on available data from interviews as well as evacuation maps provided by

the town of Watari.

Performed statistical data analysis to determine correlation between dependent variable (evacuation behavior) and various

independent variables (situational information).

Combining arcGIS technology, observable soil moisture using Google Earth historical imagery, and evacuation maps of survivors,

created a map communicating individual evacuation routes.

Assessed areas of traffic based on mode of transportation (determines rate), distance from epicenter and distance from coast, and

time of evacuation.

Presented initial results at academic conferences and prepared snapshot for publication in research journal.

Paleoglaciology of Sweden and Norway Stockholm University Dep’t of Geology, Stockholm, Sweden

Purdue University EAPS 2015

Participated in a two week Scandinavian expedition to study the glacial history of Sweden and Norway through field work, ArcGIS

mapping, and close collaboration with graduate students and faculty of the geology department at Stockholm University.

Compared and contrasted glacial landscape of Dalarna, Sweden with previous glacial history of Northern Indiana thousands of years

ago.

Fieldwork included intensive hikes over several kilometers, glacier climbing, visual identification of paleoglacial landforms, and

GPS data collection.

Environmental and Social Impact of Micro-hydropower in West Central Cameroon University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand

Purdue University Global Design Team 2014

Collaborated with a large team of engineers, scientists, and anthropologists from the Purdue University Global Design

Network to improve the existing community hydropower turbine design in Bangang, Cameroon.

Drafted, Performed, and Presented Environmental Risk Assessment (EIA) of dam to stakeholder groups and design

review committee.

Aided in the creation of surveys to administer to local residents of Bangang, Cameroon.

Partnered with nonprofit organization, African Center for Renewable Energy (ACREST).

Earthquake Engineering Student in Christchurch, New Zealand University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand

Purdue University Office of Global Engineering 2014

Worked alongside a group of 18 Purdue Engineering students traveling to Christchurch New Zealand while concurrently taking a

course on earthquake engineering at the University of Canterbury.

Provided unique insight from the perspective of a geoscientist.

Researched earthquake recovery strategy of Christchurch, New Zealand after the city suffered a series of devastating earthquakes in

early 2011.

Investigated damaging effects of liquefaction, soil strength failure, and analyzed structural instability on the Canterbury Provincial

Government Buildings.

Evaluated established recovery plans to rebuild the city of Christchurch, assessing factors such as community resilience, emergency

response, time, and cost of implementation.
