MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER
Last weekend, our Hillcrest ‘family’ began welcoming in and bonding with new students in the Sixth Form
and in Year 9. Both were very successful – just look at the photographs in the reports inside.
The Sixth Form shared activities for the morning at school. Thanks to our new Prefects whose first
challenge was to organise and run it. The Sixth Form are a vital team who initiate and run many
activities in school; we are blessed by the standards they set as role models and the initiatives they run
for the younger students.
As for Year 9, just the photographs demonstrate the adventure and enjoyment shared. Thanks to Mrs
Channa who organised it and Mr Duffield, Ms Hooper, Mr Mongare and Mrs Muthama for giving up a
weekend to get to know their Tutor Group outside the classroom.
The Hillcrest sporting calendar also began with a successful Basketball training and skills morning, last
Saturday. A firm foundation built towards victories to report later in the season. Thanks to Mr Kariuki and
the Sprite Storm team coaches.
Once again, fifty UK Universities were hosted at Hillcrest on Thursday, when A Level students from
Hillcrest and other local Secondary schools were able to explore opportunities for tertiary study. The UK
Universities Fair is one of the first events of our Careers Year. Thank you to Maurice Otieno and his team
for ensuring its success.
Attached to this newsletter, you will find a letter from the Chairman of our Board of Governors, Mr Bob
Kikuyu regarding our new Academic Governor.
Finally, I would like to welcome all parents, but especially those with students new to Hillcrest in every
year group, from 6pm “Meet the School” on Thursday 21st September. Join me to share the school vision,
meet staff and share refreshments. I will see you there!

Message from the Deputy Head Student Welfare
Wow! What a busy start to the term. Another week has flown by again however, all our students seem to
be settling in well especially the Year 9 students who have returned from their Bonding Trip full of
exciting stories and looking rather tired (as one should after such a trip). Trips are an essential part of
school life at Hillcrest and we extend our students opportunities to explore and interpret their world
which is essential for any young person’s development.
In other year groups, students have completed their safeguarding training through the PSCHE
programme and are now all aware of the responsibilities they have to create a safe community in which
they can all thrive. Safeguarding is basic to our practice at Hillcrest and, in order to maintain our high
standards, we have revised several policies that will be shared as the year progresses.
In the meantime, please may I draw your attention to our medical policy which clearly states that any
medication during the school day must be administered by the school’s medical staff. Therefore, if your
children are on any medication (no matter how serious the problem maybe) please get in contact with
either of the school nurses so we can meet your child’s needs appropriately.
As always my door is open and if you have any further questions regarding medical matters, then please
feel free to contact me via email or make an appointment to see me in person.
Have a great weekend!

JUNIOR SCHOOL
It has been a busy week for all the Year 9 students as it has been full of academic lessons, Games and
this afternoon is their first Co-curricular Friday afternoon activity slot.
Student diaries have all been issued to all the Year 9 students so please be aware and sign them on
Sunday evening. Feel free to communicate with your child's form tutor at any juncture.
If there are any further timetable changes to be made, please ask your child to communicate these to me
either via email, or in school ensuring I write down exactly what they would like changed.
The homework timetable has been finalised and there are different timetables for 9A, 9B, 9C and 9D for
Green and Blue weeks. I have asked the Year 9 form tutors to make copies for their tutees to stick into
their homework diaries for their reference. The timetable is in the next page of this Bulletin.
The Bonding Trip to Malewa for Year 9 students was a successful weekend and I have seen some lovely
pictures of all the entire year group 'mucking' into their activities with a very fresh outlook. This week
they all seem so well 'gelled' and the subject teachers are commenting on how lovely and warm this Year
9 group is. Thank you Aashi Kotecha for writing the article for the Year 9 Bonding trip and massive
congratulations to her on getting the best Common Entrance results this year.
Please make a note that next Thursday 21st September at 6pm there will be an opportunity for all the
parents to 'Meet the School' in a formal setting. There will be bitings and drinks thereafter.
Have a superb weekend ahead.

Year 9 Bonding Trip to Malewa
On Friday 8th September Year 9 students, new and fresh from starting the school year, set off for the
annual Year 9 Bonding Trip. They were set for adventures and a great experience with their new
classmates.
They learnt each other’s names and got to know each other better from icebreakers and team building
activities. They were also split into four groups and had a unique experience tubing down the River
Malewa, overcoming their fears and conquering the high ropes, building strategies and teamwork skills in
the game ‘beba maji’ and overcoming challenges presented by ‘escape.’
Year 9 greatly enjoyed the activities that were provided for them- especially the fashion show of
newspaper and napkins and the strategic and deceiving card game: Mafia.
Overall, the trip was an all-round success from the bus ride there, all the way back. Adventure and
enjoyment was experienced by all the Year 9 students as they conquered their fears and developed their
sense of adventure.
A big mention and thank you goes to Mrs. Channa and the form tutors for organising the trip and for Mr.
Duffield, Mrs. Muthama, Mr. Mongare and Ms Hooper for accompanying Year 9 on this trip.

YEAR 9 BONDING TRIP LAST WEEKEND
7
MIDDLE SCHOOL
Students now have diaries and homework timetables (a copy is below in this Bulletin). Parents can
support teachers by ensuring that the work is done, and/or that here has been adequate consultation to
enable the student to do their work. If we maintain the corporation between parents and teachers in this
regard, there will be a considerable improvement in the quality of work and eventually, in the results.
As mentioned last week, the Year 10 students will be going on their Bonding Trip to Soysambu on Friday
22nd September. The few parents who have not paid are encouraged to do so as soon as possible.
Unfortunately, payments must now be made in cash as the time left is too short to clear cheques.
It is my sincere hope that all students will come and enjoy the outdoors, as well as bond and develop
good working relationships.
I am looking forward to seeing you all, old and new parents, at the Meet the School Evening next
Thursday 21st September at 6pm.

SIXTH FORM
UK Careers Fair:
This was held at Hillcrest on Thursday where we had a total fifty UK Universities in attendance. I am sure
the Year 12 students who graced the event found it useful as they narrow down on their career path and
university choices.
For the Year 13 students a decision on the top five choices for all those heading to the UK should now be
easier and more manageable. For the rest of students not going to the UK, a firm decision on what degree
course should be much easier. My thanks go to the Year 13 prefects for helping in making sure that the day was a success. What A week of Sporting Success!
Congratulations to all the seniors who have been amazing in the past week. Well done to everyone and I
am blocking my evenings from next week to be at the field watching you dazzle. October/November Exams:
We have a few of the senior students taking
examinations; please use your time well in
termsof revision and aim for the very best.
Have a good weekend.

INSPIRATION FROM LEARNING SUPPORT
TIPS FROM LEARNING SUPPORT
The new school year is an ideal time to set yourself some new targets or goals –
both academic and personal.
To make your targets achievable - make sure they are SMART!
Specific – What exactly do you want to achieve?
Measured – How will you know when you get there?
Attainable – What steps will you take to reach your target?
Relevant – How will achieving this target help YOU?
Timely – How long will it take you to reach your goal? Set yourself a realistic time limit.

SPORTING SUCCESS
As the summer holidays give way to a new term, we in Hillcrest Sports department are happy to welcome
our old and new students and catch up with their achievements during the long break. We are always
happy to know that our students have a passion for sport and they always endeavour to maintain a
positive approach towards sports even during long school holidays.
Over the summer holidays, one of our talented sports person, SOHAIL AHMED, was enrolled in a Tennis
Camp, at the Elite Tennis Academy in Spain. The camp, often has children who play rigorous tennis from
both Spain and around the world. The camp had three age categories, namely; U11, U15 and U19. Sohail
Ahmed who is only 14 years old, was promoted to play in the U19 category given his high level of
performance whilst playing against older boys.
Before travelling to Spain, Sohail participated in an U15 Cricket Tournament in Nairobi, which had various
Nairobi Provincial Cricket Association teams playing over a period of two weeks. Several games were
played, and on the back of two MAN-OF-THE-MATCH performances, Sohail Ahmed was awarded the BEST
BOWLER OF THE TOURNAMENT given that he had taken the highest number of wickets during the
tournament. Additionally he had the second highest number of runs scored, and missed the best batsman
award by 3 runs.
Sohail has subsequently received a letter from Cricket Kenya, who had selectors scouting for talented
players, during the above mentioned tournament, informing him of his selection to represent the KENYA
U15 CRICKET NATIONAL TEAM in an U15 regional tournament which was held in Nakuru. The coach of
KENYA U15 has invited Sohail to additional training with the Kenya National Team for U15 Boys Cricket.
Cricket Kenya will be having local and International matches in the coming months for the U15 Cricket
National Team and we will be sure to watch out for Sohail as he represents his school and country.
We would like to give our hearty congratulations to Sohail for his exemplary achievements and wish him
well in all his future sporting undertakings. Well done Sohail and keep it up.

THE HILLCREST BOYS AND GIRLS BASKETBALL CAMP 9th SEPTEMBER 2017
This year’s Basketball Camp was attended by thirty-four eager pupils. The camp, run by players and
coaches from the Sprite Basketball Club, lived up to its expectations of being nothing less than
spectacular, with the boys and girls doing their best to learn.
The Sprite Storms team, led by coach, Abel Nson, took the players through various skills including boxing
out, defence and shooting. The camp started at 9.00 am and ended at 1.15 pm.
The coaches then selected outstanding players based on enthusiasm, hard work and an ability to grasp the
learned skills quickly. Of these, six girls received T-shirt awards; Miracle Denga; Minke Lootsman; Mariam
Kimutai; Chelsea Matu; Mellisa Mwangi; Loryn Muhia.
Likewise, six boys received T-shirt awards; Alexis Boulanger; Sarijore Moloimet; Melvil Mwende; Mathew
Githinji; Michael Page-Morris; Ivan Njuguna.
I am sure that this camp motivated the boys and girls to play better and turn out for their respective
school Basketball teams.
