Create Clothing Manikin/Doll In Blender
This tutorial is to guide you thru the process of creating a clothing manikin/doll with
in Blender. This tutorial is based on these previous works and modified for the current
version of Blender 2.69
1. “MAKING A DOLL FOR HEXAGON by Sanbie”
2. “Create a Poser clothing rig in Blender 2.49 3dOutlaw”
3. “Infamous T59 Hexagon Clothing Workshop tutorial”
I wil l be working using Poser 2012 but most of the steps are backward compatible
with previous versions of Poser and the steps should also work with Daz Studio as to
how to export your character. So let’s get onto and have some fun Modeling.
Get Blender http:/ /www.blender.org
Open up Poser and Load your preferred character
Blender is a powerful modeling program and over the last couple of years and has
made great advancements in usabil i ty and UI enhancements to make i t more user
fr iendly. Granted i t is st i l l int imidating when you first start i t up but once you
develop your own workflow and become familiar with the tools and even customize i t
your way I think you will l ike myself wonder how you l ived without i t . The Default
start up scene or screen of Blender can be a bit int imating so let me just go over some
of the basic regions so you will be able to further follow along with the rest of this
tutorial .
Blender Navigation
One of the obstacles most new users encounter when first exploring Blender is
navigation especial ly when coming from other applications. I wil l not go into too
much detai l on navigat ion as that would be more for a beginner’s tutorial which would
make this one longer than need be but I wil l cover a few things you will need to know
to be able to accomplish this tutorial . I highly recommend and encourage that you
watch the Blender Basics – Introduction for beginners at Blender Cookie there are 6
lessons in the series that wil l give you a good basis of how to do things with in
Blender.
Your Number pad is your fr iend when i t comes to navigation in Blender become
familiar with i t since you will be using the Numb-pad often
The Numb-pad keys are not to be confused with the number keys above on your
keyboard they do not perform the same functions as the Numb-pad keys. I wil l be
referring to these keys as we proceed thru the tutorial . Also as a note as you see the
“5” key is your Perspective and Orthopedic views creating our Doll we will primarily
be working in Front Orthopedic view.
Other keys that I wil l be using thru the tutorial is the “Delete” & “Tab” key
which will get you from object mode to edit mode more easily. Keyboard shortcuts in
Blender wil l speed you thru your workflow process I wil l add a l ist of the most
common keyboard shortcuts at the end of this tutorial that you can print out and have
by your desk when modeling in Blender.
OK lets go import our poser exported obj into Blender
I hope this tutorial is helpful in encouraging you to explore Blender and add i t
to your workflow for Modeling. I would welcome any comments and cri t iques as this
is my first at tempt at making and putt ing together a tutorial . One of the things I know
I did not mention earl ier is that you save often. Blender has had a reputation of
sometimes crashing when you least want i t to I have not experienced this as much with
the latest versions. Blender has many features that are constantly being developed and
improved on and the community for i t has also seen growth in leaps and bounds so if
you get stuck do not hesitate to ask for help.
