COVID-19 in Young People• Less than 10% of Lexington’s COVID cases in children 5-17 years• Symptoms in children are similar to adults, but usually milder• Hospitalizations and deaths are uncommon in children (about 1% of
Lexington’s COVID hospitalizations; no deaths in children in Lexington)• Children with COVID are likely to produce about the same amount of virus as
adults• Spreading can occur among young people, though children and youth are not
currently felt to be as key to the spread of COVID as they are in the spread of influenza
• COVID is spread more efficiently than influenza• Physical distancing, mask wearing and handwashing all help curb the spread of
COVID
• 8,093 total cases reported
• KY DPH is reporting 5,803 cases for Fayette County
• 2,099 (26%) of all Fayette cases are college or university students
*as of 9/23/2020
• 616 total cases 5-17 years of age, <5 were hospitalized
• Represents 8% of total cases and <1% of hospitalizations in Fayette County
• 69 total cases in childcare workers at >40 sites
• 516 total cases have required hospitalization
• 19% of hospitalized are residents of a long-term care facility

Exposure and Contact Tracing
● The number of exposures among members outside of the university community (not UK students or employees) who live in Fayette County represents only 5.5% of total exposures in our system.
● More than 31,000 tests have been conducted○ ~1,300 positive test results (since July)○ More than 30,000 negative results (since July)
● More than 1,200 students have recovered● There are less than 500 active cases, among the ~25,000 students physically
coming to campus.● The seven-day new case average for the week of Sept. 14 is lower than the
previous week.● The current active positive case count is similar to the prior week of Aug. 31.● The current campus isolation occupancy is 31%.
