Die Republik Malta (malt. Repubblika ta’ Malta) ist ein südeuropäischer Inselstaat im Mittelmeer. Der maltesische Archipel verteilt sich auf die drei bewohnten Inseln Malta (einschließlich Manoel Island, etwa 246 Quadratkilometer), Gozo (malt. Għawdex, etwa 67 Quadratkilometer) und Comino (Kemmuna, etwa 3 Quadratkilometer) sowie auf die unbewohnten Kleinstinseln Cominotto (Kemmunett), Filfla, St. Paul’s Islands und Fungus Rock.Die Hauptinsel Malta ist in zwei Regionen mit fünf Bezirken gegliedert. Gozo und Comino bilden zusammen die dritte Region und den sechsten Bezirk. Der Name Malta geht auf die punische Bezeichnung für einen Zufluchtsort malet zurück, die Griechen nannten die Inseln Melite (Μελίτη), bei den Römern hieß sie Melita.Malta war britische Kolonie und wurde am 21. September 1964 unabhängig. Am 1. Mai 2004 wurde es Mitglied der Europäischen Union und ist seitdem deren kleinster Mitgliedsstaat. Am 1. Januar 2008 wurde in Malta der Euro eingeführt.

It lies 80 km (50 mi) south of Sicily, 284 km (176 mi) east of Tunisia, and 333 km (207 mi) north of Libya. The country covers just over 316 km2 (122 sq mi), making it one of the world's smallest and most densely populated countries. The capital of Malta is Valletta, which is also, at 0.8 km2, the smallest capital in the European Union. Malta has two official languages: Maltese and English.
