A light hearted look at Phase Tests, however the serious point is that all of these questions have been raised in recent months.

Only a small number of candidates are likely to need
re-assessment ,so the following arrangements will only be
needed on a very few occasions.
Initial Phase Tests to take place in May–June. Pay rises will be automatic . Concentrate on delivering the unit
leave pay to CITB/SBATC/SPADAC . All apprentices will progress automatically. Re –assessment should take place immediately at the end of each
test ,with a focus only on aspects they have not achieved,
treat like any other unit. SQA policy is up to two resits.
If necessary a re-sit can be taken early in the next

Assessment Appeals handled as for any other unit. Feedback from the assessor and remediation to be conducted
as for any other unit. Internal verification of the Construction Crafts Competence
Assessment unit should take place as with any other unit. Phase Tests must be undertaken by all apprentices from CITB
or any other agency. This is a formal unit in the qualification.

The review of the TAPs during autumn and winter 2012 resulted in some Generic Units being merged into a single TAP covering
- Scientific Principles.
- Construction Drawing/ Sketching.
- Insulation and sustainability.
Generic Units in a single TAP.Generic Units in a single TAP.It was agreed that each craft area would identify what and where within the specialist TAPs each of the following outcomes were being addressed.1. Identifies scientific principles to be covered throughout
the relevant Craft PDA
Number and specific principles must be relevant to each occupational area, however a minimum of four scientific principles is required.
2. Interpret and/or produce occupational construction sketches and/or drawings throughout the relevant Craft PDA

3. Complete craft construction practices used to increase insulation or reduce carbon emissions

In 2012-2013 all centres used the mapping exercises specific to each craft. This allowed the new PDAs to be delivered using the OLD TAPs.
In 2013-2014 we should again follow the individual craft mapping exercise but we need to use the NEW TAPs.

assessments which meet the requirements of the new PDA units for each craft.
2012 – 2013.
For PDA specialist units in academic year 2012-2013 – the evidence required for verification is the knowledge evidence, tasks, tests, checklists and feedback sheets available in the old TAPs and the resultant candidate product evidence.
For PDA specialist or generic units with no mapped old TAPs – you should reschedule these to be delivered in academic year 2013-2014 when the new TAPs for these units will be available.

As of August 2013, all new TAPs will be published and therefore will replace the old TAPs in academic year 2013-2014.

Knowledge assessment 30 question multiple choice paper.
Originally SBATC and SPADAC favoured students undertaking this assessment during their first attendance at college in first year. However this proved impractical.
Discuss and agree a week number in the first year when students from your craft area would be ready to undertake this assessment.
Consider when each of the knowledge topics listed on the workshop sheet would be covered in a specialist or generic TAP to inform your decision making.

The practical checklist included in Workshop 2 shows all of the competences which need to be displayed to achieve this TAP.
For your craft area discuss when and in which TAP each of the items on the checklist can be covered/displayed.
