Warm-up
• Read the poem on the handout and answer questions 1-3 on your warm up sheet (please do NOT write on the handout).
• Discuss its thematic connection to the novella.
Circular plot- comparison
• Read the opening of chapter 1- just the first two paragraphs where the setting is described. Then, read the first six paragraphs of chapter 6, where the river is once again described.
• Make a T-chart with your group in which you compare the diction used in each description. How do certain words change the mood?
Imagery
• Steinbeck was known for his simple yet powerful imagery. There are several types of imagery used repeatedly in the text: trees/leaves, animal, sunlight/darkness, etc.
• We will track the use of sunlight imagery through the text.
