What do students need to do in an exam?

- be able to talk about themselves - show knowledge about a topic- express opinions on a topic- be able to describe and compare pictures

- take part in a communicative task i.e. role play, agreeing on a decision

- listen, interpret and respond

Which means:

- Having to listen and answer effectively- Having the necessary words and / or techniques if you don’t know the word

- Having the language to describe and compare pictures (on the left, both pictures are)

- Knowing how to structure a monologue- Knowing how to take turns, show interest and negotiate

Personalization • Explicitly needed in tasks 1 and 2 • Implicitly needed in the other tasks

• Encourage students: - to listen carefully and not give a memorized answer - to express their opinions - to say what they think - to say how something applies to them - build in pairwork so all speak - always encourage them to say why - don’t ignore personalisation tasks in the coursebook

How does a coursebook help?

Built in personalisation questions from the start of the book :

e.g. Headway Intermediate

How does a coursebook help?

Built in personalisation questions from the start of the book :

- Do you have a social conscience? - Sherlock homes is probably the most famous detective in the world of English Literature, what do you know about him? - Work with a partner, what is your favourite day of the week, why? - Do you think the Earth will continue to get warmer?

e.g. Headway Intermediate

Taken from Headway Maturita Edition

Roleplays – Parts 3 and 4

-listen and respond-initiate -make suggestions-negotiate -agree (or disagree)-show interest-turn take

1. Teach the language students need for picture (prepositions, tenses)

2. When using coursebook material encourage students to give a personal view and / or relate it to something Czech.

3. Encourage pairwork - it gets students used to turn taking, making eye contact, showing interest, etc

4. Don’t over correct – remember most exams are not about being 100% accurate, conveying the message is what counts.

5. Spend a few minutes each lesson on speaking - even if it’s the not main aim of the lesson as I have shown, it’s easy to add speaking to any lesson.
