Plenary Speaker
L. Terry Clausing is a licensed Professional Engineer with more than 40 years in thermal and spectral analysis with a primary focus on infrared temperature measurement. He is certified ASNT NDT and PdM Level III in infrared and thermal testing and certified NAS 410 Level III in thermal infrared for examination of aerospace materials. Clausing has a background in industrial engineering in a variety of industries, including toy manufacturing, shoe manufacturing, can manufacturing, sawmill operations, and bottling for a distillery. He attended the engineering program at the University of Cincinnati, earning a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) and an M.B.A. from Xavier University. He has worked at Drysdale and Associates, Inc. since 1985. In more recent years, Clausing has provided consulting and problem solving services to a wide variety of customers for condition and process monitoring based on spectral and thermal analysis, primarily in the infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Clausing is the 2015 president of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT). He also chairs the ASTM E07.10 subcommittee on Specialized NDT Methods. Clausing is co-chair of the International Committee on Nondestructive Testing (ICNDT) Working Group 6 on Condition Monitoring. Additionally, he was actively involved in a 2014 certification-based memorandum of understanding between ASNT and the Residential Energy Services Network, and he participates in student outreach activities that promote the practice and profession of nondestructive testing.
Invited Speakers
Uwe Zscherpel received his PhD from the University of Leipzig in Experimental Physics on Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy of Zeolites. In 1992 he changed to non-destructive testing and since 1996 he is head of the working group “Digital Radiology and Image Analysis” at BAM Berlin. His area of expertise is digital image processing in industrial radiology, including NDT film digitization, digital image analysis, pattern recognition and digital reference catalogues for weldings and castings. Additional working fields are testing and certification of all types of radiographic image detectors like NDT film systems, imaging plates and digital detector arrays for industrial applications. He is active in various standardisation committees on industrial radiology in DIN, CEN, ISO, IEC and IIW.
Yong Li has currently been an associate professor in School of Aerospace, of Xi’an Jiaotong University (China) since 2009. His research interests involve Finite Element Simulation and analytical modelling for Electromagnetic problems; theory of Electromagnetic Non-destructive Testing and Evaluation (ENDT&E); Instrumentation of ENDT&E; Radio-frequency measurement for detection and characterisation of objects; 3D magnetic field measurement using magnetic sensors and arrays; Signal processing and feature extraction techniques. He received the bachelor's degree and master’s degree in Electrical Engineering at School of Electrical Engineering, of Xi’an Jiaotong University (China) in 2001 and 2004. After graduation, he worked as a full-time research assistant in Huddersfield University (UK) from 2006 to 2007, and Newcastle University (UK) from 2007 to 2009 as a full-time research associate. His work focused on: (1) theoretical and experimental investigation of ENDT&E; and (2) techniques regarding people screening for threats with automatic detection and localisation. Meanwhile, he studied as a part-time postgraduate student towards PhD in ENDT&E at Huddersfield University (UK) from 2005 to 2007 and Newcastle University (UK) from 2007 to 2009. He received PhD in ENDT&E from Newcastle University (UK) in 03/2009. He has been involved in more than 10 projects related to Electromagnetics, and has published more than 50 scientific papers on Electromagnetics in conferences, national and international journals.
Sohichi Hirose is a professor in the Graduate School of Information Science and Engineering at Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech), Tokyo, Japan, and is currently the president of the Japanese Society for Non-Destructive Inspection (JSNDI). He received the degree of Dr. Eng. in Civil Engineering from Kyoto University, Japan in 1987. After working as an assistant professor at Kyoto University and an associate professor at Okayama University, he joined Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1998. His research interests are numerical simulation of wave propagation and scattering of elastic waves, ultrasonic signal processing and flaw imaging. Recently he is involved in application of nondestructive testing to social infrastructure.
Dr. B. Venkatraman from the 27th batch of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre Training School joined the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam, India in 1984. With a research career spanning 31 years, he has combined the physics of NDE with engineering and technology and consistently provided excellent R & D support and robust NDE based solutions to technologically challenging problems in the nuclear and other strategic/core industries. He has been primarily responsible for establishing the real time and digital X-ray and neutron radiography and thermal imaging facilities at the IGCAR, Kalpakkam and developing many NDE procedures and techniques such as microfocal radiography for steam generator of fast reactor, high sensitivity radiography combined with image processing of highly irradiated fuel pins, computed radiography of thin walled weldments etc. many of which have been successfully implemented in the industries. He is presently the Head, Radiological Safety Division and Associate Director, Radiological Safety and Environment Group at IGCAR, Kalpakkam, India.
