Keep your Purpose clearly in mind

• Is your focus on the subject’s life or personality?

Set up the interview in advance

Do your homework

• Research your subject well in advance of the interview.

Make a list of questions

• Your questions should be specific about the main issues and subtopics that you wish to explore.

• Keep values and judgments out of the questions.

• Avoid questions that lead• to “yes” or “no” answers.

Practice

Talk as little as possible during the interview

Be aware of subject when they make self-serving remarks or share biases.

Take notes and tape the interview

Prepare for the possibility of a return visit
