Introduction to cover theory and practice

Aims

This unit aims to

• introduce students to the techniques used in a 3D visualisation and animation system

• introduce students to computer programming and a scripting language

• enable students to learn proficient and practical and creative processes of designing visual sequences with a 3D visualisation and animation system

Intended Learning Outcomes

Having completed this Unit the student is expected to demonstrate:

1 Basic Skills in computer graphics techniques

2 Creative skills

3 Critical skills

Indicative Content

•Introduction to a 3D animation system

•Introduction to a 2D paint system

•How to apply scripting techniques to animation exercises/projects

•The basic techniques used in an animation system (modelling, lighting, camera, object, attributes, rendering and scripting)

•The basic computer graphics processes in producing a piece of animation (Storyboarding, Scheduling, Block-testing and Final Production)

Learning and Teaching Methods

This unit consists of three themes - set projects, modelling, animation and rendering techniques and scripting

Set Projects will be supported by critiques and tutorials, supplemented by seminars, specialist lectures and two field trips to galleries and appropriate venues

Modelling, Animation and Rendering Techniques will be taught by a series of lectures supported by demonstrations and set exercises

Scripting will be delivered through a series of lectures and practical sessions in the computer animation studio
