Principal’s Message
École Capitol Hill NNewsletter #5
December, 2017
Dear Parents, It is hard to believe that our first term is rapidly coming to an end. The month of December is look-ing to be one filled with lots of activities and celebrations. We are looking forward to a visit from a special guest from the northern regions for our Annual Pancake Breakfast to be held on the morn-ing of Friday, December 22nd. We are asking for a toonie ($2) donation to benefit the Burnaby Children’s Fund. Don’t forget to bring your own plate and utensils on that morning and wear your favourite pajamas! Please see page 2 of this newsletter for further details about the Pancake Breakfast. Our staff and intermediate students have been busy preparing for our Winter Concert to be held on December 19th. There will be two performances that day, one in the afternoon at 1:30pm and an evening performance at 7pm. For further information please check on page 2 under the heading “Snow Biz”. Our Student Leadership team of grade 6 and 7 students have been very busy planning activities throughout this term. I would like to thank them for all of their efforts and fantastic energy, to help add to the wonderful spirit at École Capitol Elementary. They will be col-lecting non-perishable food donations for our annual food drive during the month of December to assist those less fortunate in our community. First term report cards will be issued to all of our students on December 22nd. If you are interested in scheduling an optional Parent/Teacher conference, please check the appropriate section on the report card envelope and return it back to your child’s teacher or contact the teacher directly via email or phone. A special thank you to our Primary Classroom Monitors for a job well done! These intermediate students help supervise students in our primary classes during the noon hour and on inside rainy days. They help by supervising our younger students at these times to ensure their safety and greatly assist our Noon Hour Supervisors during lunch time. This is such an important student job at our school and we want to recognize their efforts! I would like to take this opportunity in thanking you all for your continued support of our school, and wish you all a very safe, restful, and peaceful holidays. We look forward to seeing you all in 2018!

Dear Parents/Guardians:
This is to inform you that we are moving to a new system to send out
parent information. We will be accessing the email address you have
provided on your child’s verification form that is securely stored in your
child’s MyEducation BC (MyEd BC) account. Emailed notices will be
distributed by authorized school or district personnel only.
There are a few changes you will notice when receiving school emails. It will no longer come from School
name - L@LISTS.SD41.BC.CA but rather DONOTREPLY@SD41.bc.ca < sysadmin@myeducation.gov.bc.ca.
Additionally, email from your PAC executive will come through the school administration and will be sent
out using this database.
The advantages to using the MyEd BC database include:
Being able to send targeted information – grade or even class specific
A reduction in the challenges we have experienced with emails not being received to certain email
domains (Hotmail, in particular)
Schools will maintain only one database
District staff will be able to send important District information
As per the List-Serv system, you will not be able to reply to emails and you will not see the names of the
other persons on the list. If you have more than one child in the same school and receive duplicate emails
from the new system please contact the school to inform them.
You may still unsubscribe to receiving emails at any time, however, it is important that you are aware that
the ability to share information with parents via email is critical. Electronic communication is used for
emergency purposes, to inform you of report card information, school, grade or classroom specific infor-
mation and updates to curriculum.
We remain committed to providing you with information that is directly related to your child’s educational
experience. If you have any questions, please call the office.
This year Capitol Hill Intermediate students will be involved in Snow Biz—a winter musical for everyone! Save
the Date! Ticket request notices will go home soon including PAC auction
seats. Please remember families will be allotted 2 seats per family. Re-
maining seats will be allotted once first requests are fulfilled.
Dress Rehearsal: December 18th: 9:30am
Afternoon Performance: December 19th: 1:30pm
Evening Performance: December 19th: 7:00pm
Friday, December 22nd is the annual Pancake Break-
fast and Pajama Day. Students are invited to wear their
pajamas for the day and enjoy some pancakes. Thank
you to the Burnaby Fire Department for volunteering
their time for this annual event.

Weather Related School Closures
Closure information will also be posted on the district website at [www.burnabyschools.ca]www.burnabyschools.ca and on Twitter @burnabyschools (please follow us!). However, keep in mind that there may be situations where this is not possible, for example, if there are power outages or technical prob-lems. The most reliable way to get school closure information is to listen to the local radio stations.
PLEASE NOTE: Information will only be provided on school closures. If there is no closure information, our schools are open for learning! However, the decision to send your child to school or not is ultimately a family decision.

UBC Girlsmarts!
UBC Girlsmarts is a non-profit organization
launched by the UBC Computer Science de-
partment to help girls spark and sustain an
interest in computer science. Our organiza-
tion has been running workshops since 2004
and we often partner up with various local
tech companies (including Microsoft, Ama-
zon, SAP, and many others) to run many dif-
ferent workshops and activities for girls in
grades 6 to 12. This year, we will be offering two grade 6
workshops (in partnership with Microsoft) and
one grade 7 workshop (in partnership with
SAP). Please note that our workshops are for
girls only. Our grade 6 workshops will teach
girls about programming their own game,
cybersecurity, creating their own webpage,
and hardware. The grade 7 workshops are
run in partnership with SAP and will teach girls
about design thinking, programming, social
gaming, and user interface/user experience.
