Helping the Neurologically Impaired PatientAttention, memory and learning are the most commonly reported problems associated with neurological insults whether the impairment is secondary to injury, disease or a disorder. Neurological impairments decrease one’s ability to assimilate information needed for learning; can isolate and/or limit social interactions; and significantly decrease one’s overall quality of life. The full spectrum of neurological impairments affects a person cognitively, physically, emotionally, socially, and functionally. Since patients are diverse in etiology, pathology and functional abilities, understanding the processes underlying cognitive-communication impairments is absolutely crucial. Choosing relevant assessment instruments and learning to critically think when developing effective intervention techniques is foremost for successful outcomes.
In this one-day, dynamic program rich with case studies and interactive learning, Jane Yakel, M.S., CCC-SLP, reveals the essence of cognitive-communication disorders and offers a neuroscience model used to guide intervention. Relating this model to frequently used assessment measures/instruments, Jane will provide you with innovative and evidence-based approaches to therapy and intervention techniques focusing on the three key domains of cognitive-communication: attention, memory and executive function. The “stage” and the “systems” models of memory will also be discussed in relation to areas of cognitive breakdown. Course DirectorJANE YAKEL, M.S., CCC-SLP, is a certified licensed Speech-Language Pathologist with 38 years of experience in academia and rehabilitation. Ms. Yakel has taught at several universities, including the University of Wyoming, Utah State University, and DeVry Universities in Phoenix, Arizona, and Freemont, California. She has been the director of a community re-entry program for traumatic brain injury survivors, and has served as a regional clinical specialist and national speech-language pathology consultant. Additionally, she has worked in a variety of clinical settings, including acute care, outpatient clinics, skilled nursing facilities, home health agencies, hospitals and school districts. Ms. Yakel obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Wyoming specializing in neuropathology. She is a member of American Speech Language Hearing Association and is a prior member of Board of Examiners for Speech Language Pathology and Audiology. Ms. Yakel is an author and presenter of multiple national and state-board approved continuing education courses including Prospective Payment System (PPS); Management in Practice; Ethics and Professionalism; Critical Thinking Skills for a Comprehensive Assessment of the Adult Patient; Standards for Clinical Documentation; and Cognitive-Communication Disorders. Her diversified experience in the academic and healthcare industries has assisted her in identifying strong clinical skills in assessment and patient identification, evaluation and treatment, as well as patient and family education with varying etiologies in multiple settings.
