As a group we talked to a variety of different actual families to get a deeper understanding of the first child and family dynamic. We developed a personality and user lifestyle for all of the characters to bring unique insights

to life.

They are both in the creative industry. While Marc works full time. Christina works only half and spends the rest of her day with Angelica. They live in Vancouver B.C. in a small house

outside downtown.

Baby monitors are currently designed for ages 1-2, but parents use them for years after that. I wanted to design something that fit both the parents and childs changing lifestyle.

Through talking to our similar consumers we flushed out a day in the life of Angelica and her family. I was interested in really diving into her bedtime cycle. She has her own room and is doing things on her own now. So this is a time where she will still be wanting parental guidance but will not always get it so that she can become

her own person.

Starting with the kids device I wanted to created something that was fun and had character. Yet since this was a product family I didn’t want to take it too far in the direction of a kid so that the design language could also work for the parents device.

PRoduct age 0-3Chirp is a product with two life cycles. It is used only by the parents the first three years of life. It is the life-line that keeps your kid safe and your piece of mind. The design is fun in style and use.

PARENTS DEVIceThe concept behind Chirp comes from a desire to create a beautiful baby monitor for modern parents. They could be at a neighbors or hosting a dinner party and it fits right in.

When the child matures they can begin to use it. It is used as a night light for their nighttime bathroom trips. If anything goes wrong you will know about it. If its not an emergency the child’s button will get your attention without screaming.

STICKY BACKThe sticky back option is the easiest to use and it allows for the user to pack as many or as little as they would like. It is not dependent on a bulky

contraption

The pull tabs were partially integrated into the final concept because they have a nice

exaggeration in relationship to the use.

afford to add the extra bulk of a case.

A dispenser becomes too bulky for a trail runner to use. There are some interesting ideas that could be applied to home use, but would be

useless in the field.

user cycleBy simply peeling apart the package you reveal the sticky, skin side of the bandaid. Then you place this on your arm and pull off the backside of the wrapper. One can use the hole to pack up a specific amount for a run, or use their teeth to open for daily use.

inspirationI was really inspired by the way kids can really use anything to create fun. Kids use their hands to do a variety of different gestures or puppets.

dual useKids are easily bored with toys that have one purpose. The idea behind Hanimals is that there will be a discovery process, in which you realize the two distinct wasy to use them.

Field researchWe tested a variety of LED and HPS lights that are currently used in parks and public areas. We found that the LED shows nature in a truer color, and also feels much brighter when you are near it.

The Melas has individually focused LED’s that create a large even spread of light on the ground. Single point source lighting creates a hot spot in the middle, and has a quick fall off. There are also adjustable amounts of arms to allow for

different park situations.

Instead of using solar panels or wind turbines which are useless in the City of Salem due to weather conditions, we have used efficient lighting with smart grid connectivity to turn

the lights off when not in use.

10 minutes after a passerby lights dim to 50%. They dim all the way off after 20 minutes.

melas lightThe Melas also uses spread out LED’s to create airflow through the aluminum head. The light is essentially acting as a large heat sink, which drastically increases the life of the LED.
