Chapter 7 Lesson 2 Notes
Dr. Wright’s 5th Grade Science Classes
The Plant Kingdom
•Plants are multicellular organisms.•Plants have tissues and
organs.• Their cells have cell walls.
The Plant Kingdom
• The Plant Kingdom is divided into 2 groups.
• Vascular: Plants have tissue that acts like tubes.• Nonvascular: Plants absorb water
much like a sponge soaks up a liquid.
Vascular Plants
• The vascular plant system provides support and allows plants to grow very tall.• Most vascular plants are in the
forest.
Nonvascular Plants
• Nonvascular plants cannot live in dry areas.• They must live near a water source.• The lack of a transport system
prevents nonvascular plants from growing tall.
Gymnosperms
• Gymnosperms start as a seed, then develops into a seedling, then a tree. The tree drops a cone and the process starts all over again.
Plant Adaptation•Cactus plants are adapted
to hot, dry climates. Their thick stems hold water and have a waxy coating that helps protect them from drying out.
Seed Plants
• Some vascular plants have seeds and are gymnosperms and angiosperms. •Mangrove Trees and a Barrel
Cactus are examples of seed plants.
• Gymnosperms and angiosperms produce pollen.
• The pollen on the plants attaches to bee’s legs. When the bees visit other flowers, the pollen falls off the bee’s legs onto the flower.
• Bee’s transfer pollen from flower to flower.
The End!
• Please study your notes often. You will have a chapter 7 test real soon.
