The New KingdomAhmose founded a new line of pharaohs and thus began the New Kingdom.

Egypt became richer and cities grew.

The Egyptian empire was formed at this time.

HatshepsutThutmose’s III stepmother had no interest in war

Built temples and traded with others for ivory, ebony, monkeys, dogs, animal skins, and leopard skins

Egyptians never saw these things and welcomed them.

In 1370 BC, Amenhotep IV took the throne.

He didn’t like priests and closed all temples to Amon-Re

He also set up a new religion.

Amenhotep’s ReligionWanted Egyptians to only worship one god….Aton.

He changed his name to Akhenaton, which means “spirit of Aton”

Only a few accepted his new religion.

Amenhotep died in 1360 BC and his son in law Tutankhamen became pharaoh.

King Tut….boy king….priests made him return to the old religion.
