SS7CG7a: Compare and contrast the federal republic of the Republic of India,

the communist state of the People’s Republic of China, and the constitutional monarchy of Japan, distinguishing the form of leadership and the role of the citizen in terms of voting rights and

personal freedoms.

The Republic of India

- Became independent of Great Britain in 1950

- Became a federal republic – has a parliamentary democracy

- 3 Branches of government:- Executive, legislative, and judicial

The Republic of India

- President = Ceremonial Leader- President appoints prime minister

- Prime Minister = Head of government- Heads up the Cabinet

• Legislative Branch – Divided into 2 houses

– Lok Sabha (House of the People) – elected by the citizens of India

– Rajya Sabha (Council of States) – elected by the Lok Sabha

The Republic of India• Personal Freedoms and

Rights

• Right to vote – age 18

• Freedoms of speech, assembly, religion

• Right to conserve their language and culture and to establish schools to teach about their cultures.

The People’s Republic of China

• Mao Zedong established People’s Republic of China in 1949

• Government = Communist

• Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in charge of government

• President = Ceremonial Position

• Premier = head of government
